Description: Gourmet Spot is one of Durham's finest and boldest restaurants, that has earned plaudits locally and nationally. Specialising in innovative and imaginative cuisine using the best British produce wherever possible with a modern European approach, offering a very popular 7-course tasting menu, daily a la carte and market menu to its customers. Head Chef Stephen Hardy takes great care in keeping the menus seasonal and tries to source as many ingredients as possible locally, within a 30 mile radius. Opening its doors in 2007, recognition and awards have flooded in, with the most prestigious coming from the industry gurus at Restaurant Magazine who awarded Gourmet Spot the Best Dessert in Britain prize. More recently the restaurant has been Michelin recommended in 2012 guide and achieved the TasteDurham 2012 award for highest quality assured and local produce champion for the 4th year running. Being situated far enough from the city's main drinking areas has also added to Gourmet Spot's mystique and exclusivity as peace is guaranteed. The restaurant provides the widest selection of wines in Durham City, as well as an array of spirits in its cosy bar area. Gourmet Spot is attached to the four-star Guest House Farnley Tower, so it carries the attractive Restaurant with Rooms cachet, very popular with couples. Being linked to the hotel means that there are extensive facilities for groups too. The venue has proved popular with businesses, staff training, team building, weddings and christenings.

Worth visiting - delicious food (with extras) which we were asked to order in advance (party of 6 on a Saturday evening). Compliments to the chef and to for the service, which was faultless. If only I'd had an idea of portion sizes beforehand - I would have gone for 3, rather than 2. The others in our party who... More

Visited GS on a Thursday evening for a small family occasion. To be honest, we did not expect the high level of customer service and food presentation and food quality! We ordered the three-course meal they had sent us by e-mail in advance. However, nobody even suspected all the pre-starters and pre-desserts that came along between the meals. Hake fish,... More

Well worth visiting this small restaurant for their delicious and imaginative dishes. Even for the bargain £20 For 2 courses market menu we were given complimentary 'amuse- bouche' before our starters, and chocolates with our coffee. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted divine. Loved my pan fried fish with samphire and tiny brown, it looked so pretty too.

7 course tasting menu was really more like 10 courses including coffee / hot chocolate, entries and bread. There was nothing that wasn't perfect. Service fantastic and presentation very well thought out. The chef clearly knows what he is doing. Venison was the highlight of the night. Our bill came to £150 which is pricey but you can taste the... More

Gourmet Spot is quite a small restaurant hidden away so much so that I'd never heard of it before visiting! The single waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable, and the decor was nice but a bit generic. I agree completely with the previous reviewer that the food is very creative and will certainly get your taste buds tingling as it... More

Visited the Goumet Spot to celebrate our pearl wedding anniversary. We both had the tasting menu with the recommended matching wines. From the first course of Lindisfarne battered oyster all the way to the impressive Aero chocolate mousse, the food was truly outstanding. The accompanying wines matched the food superbly. Front of house service was excellent, and we had a... More

I was taken here by my fiancée to celebrate my 30th birthday and I definitely couldn't of asked for a better present, the food was delicious, beautifully presented and every mouthful a rare treat. The hostess was delightfully friendly and very knowledgeable. I will be recommending this restaurant to anyone that will listen, it's a definite must visit.

We stayed in the hotel attached to this restaurant for the weekend, and we are so glad we ate here. The staff was lovely, the decor is classy, and i love the light up chandelier in the middle of the room. We have never tasted food so good! and we do go to a lot of nice restaurants. Admittedly it... Lovely ambience. Small and intimate. Absolutely great innovative chef. Young man only 28 started here years ago and now returned to set a new standard in the area. Adventurous beautifully presented food. Good wine list. Loads of care. Signs of someone devoted to his craft. Go whilst you can get in.
