We’re proper cooks, serving real British food, cooked properly. We don’t mess around with our food. We cook it simply, without flashy sauces, so the quality of the ingredients speak for themselves. The ingredients that go into our kitchen come from local farms and suppliers, some of whom we’ve known for years, like Joe Simpson of Cockfield, who rears, slaughters and butchers his own beef, Ian Alexander of Raby Estates with his fantastic venison and Carol Peacock from Sedgefield who makes world-beating blue cheese. Our veg comes from the local markets and our recipes are based on real British dishes with heritage.

Visited on Thursday evening - very enjoyable meal until very large party arrived but thankfully at the end of our meal. Meal good value and tasty. 2 courses and a glass of wine. Waiter very helpful and apologetic when large party arrived - suggestion to management that large groups should be catered elsewhere in the building. Otherwise worth the visit... More

Good variety of slightly different choices of food. I had the he rabbit and pigs trotter pie with crispy pigs ears which was worth the try!. Good real ale and guest beer.

Have been eating out in Durham City for many years but never visited Oldfields. This was mainly because we did not fancy being on view to passers by and viewing downmarket venues across from the restaurant due to no windows being obscured, just plain glass. However we purchased a Travelzoo Voucher and were pleasantly surprised by the standard of food... More

The pride in using local ingredients and the interesting menu with seasonal variations were in no way matched by the actual experience. The main courses were bland and overcooked. Wilted greens turned out to be largely peas and broccoli. How do you wilt a pea? The rabbit and pigs trotter pie with crispy pigs ear was a handful of dry,... More

Hosted a dinner in the function room which is located upstairs from the main restaurant. The private room is spacious and management were very flexible about table arrangements etc. Having decided on a menu and pre-ordered the food, the evening went smoothly without any hiccups. The food was delicious and the wine (house) was also very popular. Overall, a wonderful... More

I came here for a group function and we had prebooked our meals of choice. When we arrived the hoped for starter had been changed for something else kind of like blended tinned peas. Not great. The main and dessert were better, but overall I was a bit disappointed as I had heard such good reviews about it. Oh well...

I ate here with my daughter a while ago and it was outstanding. So I took my wife this time and it was very disappointing. Service was all over the place and food was average at best. Poor value for what we had. Not sure what happened really. My wife's dish did not even look like what was served to... More
