We’re proper cooks, serving real British food, cooked properly. We don’t mess around with our food. We cook it simply, without flashy sauces, so the quality of the ingredients speak for themselves. The ingredients that go into our kitchen come from local farms and suppliers, some of whom we’ve known for years, like Joe Simpson of Cockfield, who rears, slaughters and butchers his own beef, Ian Alexander of Raby Estates with his fantastic venison and Carol Peacock from Sedgefield who makes world-beating blue cheese. Our veg comes from the local markets and our recipes are based on real British dishes with heritage.

Dinner with friends

The food was tasty and well presented, but service tended to be erratic. It took a long time for the bill to be presented. We will visit again, but will try to avoid the busier times, as it seems that it was just the number of other customers that caused the difficulties we experienced.

We have always had lunch at Oldfields on the times that we have visited Durham. This time that we went was Graduation Week at Durham University and we expected it to be crowded. However, they were advertising a special Graduation Menu at £30 for a two course lunch. This was well out side the city average and we went elsewhere.... More

Firstly the waitress didn't instill confidence, confusing our requests and not knowing the constituents of the dishes. We then had rather a prolonged wait (considering there were only two other tables occupied). My meal was not very hot the suet pastry was rock hard and my chips arrived in a cold serving dish, my wife's meal was also not very... More

Evening meals are gorgeous and the Sunday Lunch is the best in Durham. Staff are always friendly and they really make you feel welcome. One of my faves

Visited here while staying in Durham while visiting our daughter. We had seen good reviews and thought we should give it a try though having previously passed the building had not found it that inviting. It was busy and the service slow, so slow that they gave My wife a free glass of white wine as a warning as we... More

We visited a few months ago around 5pm before we went to the comedy club. It was a Sunday and we had 2 courses & wine. Enjoyed it, food and service was very good, fairly empty when we first arrived but filled up as we were leaving. Tastecard 241 available here!! & on groupon at times for meals and afternoon... More

We bought a deal on Groupon as it was £23 for a £56 meal for two and then there was an offer of a further 20% discount so in total £18.40 so we felt we had nothing to lose. We expected maybe a reduced menu or small portion or lesser quality but no, a wide range of choice, plentiful portions... More

Popped in for Saturday lunch. We know the food is good and there was a good choice. The food is really tasty and imaginative. Service is friendly, and a nice looking restaurant, using and promoting British food.

We booked a table for four at Oldfields in Claypath Durham on Friday Night. We arrived 10 minutes before our booking and were shown straight to our table. The two Serving staff were excellent, one who we didnt get the name of Should be a Super Model, she was only 18 years old but had serving skills and customer service... More

I must admit I was a little worried but didn't have to be! We arrived early on a Sunday and was given the early bird menu, a couple of things had already run out which was disappointing from what was a small selection anyway but we all found something we liked All the food was well cooked and really tasty,...
