We’re proper cooks, serving real British food, cooked properly. We don’t mess around with our food. We cook it simply, without flashy sauces, so the quality of the ingredients speak for themselves. The ingredients that go into our kitchen come from local farms and suppliers, some of whom we’ve known for years, like Joe Simpson of Cockfield, who rears, slaughters and butchers his own beef, Ian Alexander of Raby Estates with his fantastic venison and Carol Peacock from Sedgefield who makes world-beating blue cheese. Our veg comes from the local markets and our recipes are based on real British dishes with heritage.

Two courses were lovely, great quality food, well cooked and presented. Service was brilliant and nice to see young local people employed here. The 12.5% service charge is a bit odd and I can see why people aren't happy with this, but on this occasion the staff deserved it. Toilets needed a... read more

Truly below average. The English are not well known for the level of service in their restaurants and Oldfields doesn't break with tradition. The staff while perfectly pleasant, were perfectly inept. This is, of course, the fault of the management for not providing adequate training and of the great English public for not voting with their mouths when standards fall... More

Ate here recently to celebrate a special occasion... The evening started well, served by a very pleasant waiter. We ordered drinks...mine was very disappointing. An 'Elderflower Collins' - I was expecting a lovely gin cocktail. I actually got almost a pint of what tasted like pop! Yes it was refreshing. But I didn't want refreshing, I wanted gin! We checked... More

The food was delicious if a little cold. We had an excellent Sunday lunch with scrummy puddings. However, we were part of a large party - [40+] so the staff were overstretched. The upstairs room was ideal for us and the staff courteous and efficient. They just needed more waiters and probably kitchen staff to cope with us all.

Bought a groupon voucher for afternoon tea and went along with a friend, the service was excellent and staff very friendly. The food was nice and the coffee was excellent. I would recommend this restaurant.

We had a voucher for afternoon tea, and I've enjoyed meals here in the distant past, so it was worth another try as a treat. Pork pie, really? And cheese savoury? The sandwich selection was poor, the cake slice were dry and the lemon cake had never seen a lemon. Pity. Even at half price. You can do better than... More

We've eaten here on many occasions both for lunch and dinner and never disappointed. The food is served to your liking, and portion size is good. The staff have always been helpful, but occasionally the temperature of the dining room can be a little cool depending on the weather...the joys of an old building. Tempted to try their frozen range,... More
