I took a few of my American undergraduates here this summer. One thought the fish and chips the best he had eaten throughout our month in the North. Myself though I enjoyed my sausage and chips, I didn't think the meal as superlative as it had been when I ate within the restauarant eighteen months ago. It was still, however,... More

having arrived after a 3 hour 30 min journey, we were tired and hungry, but as we only had this day and the next to explore, we decided to go out and about. We found this place and decided to eat inside. It was magnificent. fish batter done just right and lovely fresh chips.

Visited Durham for the first time and had a fish and chip meal in the restaurant on a Saturday evening. Unfortunately they were out of mushy peas but despite that we had a cracking meal. Could be the best fish and chips I have ever tasted which over the years compares a lot of fish and chip experiences! The fish... More

We were four first-time visitors to Durham, and this attractive looking fish restaurant was our first lunch-time stop, encouraged by the many positive reviews I had read here. The setting and the food were every bit as good as I expected - portions of Cod were enormous, and the batter was very light. Chips perfect. Home made tartare sauce delicious.... More

I have never had fish and chips until Bells, and man, was I impressed! The men behind the counter were friendly and the service was fast even with the line. We opted for the take away so we could eat down by the river. Gotta give this place a try while you're in town!

Friendly staff, lovely fish&chips with curry sauce. Kids portions are a little big for a 6 yr old but good for 8+. Definitely go again. loads of tables upstairs too.

Just coming to the end of a 4 week trip around the country and have finally found some excellent fish and chips. Bells, on the market square in Durham has a very busy takeaway but as it was so windy we chose the restaurant. Simple but clean decor throughout - we were seated upstairs. Chose a traditional lunch, haddock and... More
