OK Food, OK Service but forgettable

My friends and I decided to visit Head of Steam in Durham for some food for dinner and a chance to catch up. Having never even noticed that there was a pub tucked out the way but being aware of Head of Steam in Newcastle, I was eagerly anticipating having some good food in a lively atmosphere. The fish and chips are great and they must have the largest fish sizes in County Durham. Very well cooked and presented. Drinks a little pricy but this is a city pub.Good real ales.

Good location, excellent beer and choice of many ales, ciders and lagers but not a cheap bar. Excellent courtyard in summer to be outside

If you want an excellent selection of real ales and Belgian beers and a great atmosphere, with rock and some indie and clientele of all age groups, this is the place. A perfect spot any night of the week I'm sure, but can definitely recommend on a Saturday and always like to go in if I'm in Durham for a... More

I used to loooove the Head of Steam. You would be served by staff who were friendly, knowledgeable in beers and helpful. Now you have a lot of new staff members and they are unfriendly and act as if you are interrupting their continuous chat behind the bar when you need to order something. They also have no idea about... More

Excellent selection of beers, good music, great atmosphere & great staff, had a fabulous time. It's always on our list to visit. Even better in the summer.

lots of beer selections and they rotate the inventory. good classic rock playing through a nice stereo system. comfortable seating. definitely stick to the beer though. they had a cocktail menu, but neither bartender seemed to know how to make a proper drink. but it's my fault for ordering something other than beer, which is why you'd come to this... I can have no complaints about the food or drink. The place does what it says on the tin. However the staff were not the most hospitable and the noise levels unbearable. The louder the clientelle got the higher the volume levels on the sound system. Not a great experience.
