The only place to go for a ploughmans!!!

Ballantynes is on my ticklist every time we visit Barnstaple, the best ever ploughmans with locally sourced produce and amazing chutneys and pickles which you are able to purchase and recreate the experience when back at your own home. Sad to read comments about food taking time, we all rush around... read more

My Wife and I were in Barnstaple last week on a short break. Went into Ballantynes for lunch. We both ordered a cheese Ploughman's that was made fresh while you wait. It was without doubt the best (and largest) Ploughman's I have ever had! If you are not starving then have one between two. Really enjoyed it, thank you Ballantynes!

Excellent choice of hot and cold food and very good value for money. Salads were very filling with a good variety of different side dishes.

First visit for a while and now extended with more seating. Both had Jacket potatoes, mine was with a large salad, mums was without (just ask as this option is not listed menu). and tea for one. In the past we have had to wait a while, but food and drink came quickly, time was limited due to car park... More

Whilst on our winter annual visit to Barnstaple from Okehampton we found a gem of a food-stop in Ballantyne’s deli. It was the array of food in the window that grabbed my attention especially the pork and apple rolls that I subsequently purchased on leaving having polished off a freshly cooked fried breakfast. As a Devon business owner myself I... More

The food here is great, and that's why I keep coming back. Unfortunately the service really lets this place down (again today, like last week and the month/year before). As soon as you enter, there is hardly any customer interaction or smiling at all. Its almost as you do not exist or are actually in their way. The place is... More

We are very hungry! Still waiting (it's been over an hour) for a pasty to be warmed and salad to go on a plate! Only 8 tables full and at least 3 serving staff. Plus toilet out of order. Despite this, affable staff and jolly atmosphere.

I am so sorry you had to wait for an hour for a pasty with our salad. It honestly does not usually take that long! We were one member of staff down yesterday which does make a massive difference and all eight tables sat down all within the space of a few minutes of each other and therefore there was... More

this place is a very smart cafe serving very very good food which is available either as a take away or as a sit down meal. I've done both and would like to recommend it.

Just had breakfast here, infact still finishing up as I type. Why open a cafe and not be ready for there full service menu, ie ,if you have something on your menu and you currently offer it as a choice, then have it ready.in this business you need to be organised and ready for service!!! . Fancy having no baguettes... More
