Great for food, or just a pint

We've been in here before, mainly because it's a dog friendly pub and close to where we were staying. Finding ourselves back in the Lakes we once again found The Old John Peel, It's as friendly as ever and the food was just as good as we remembered. We lunched on well filled sandwiches and a... read more

My wife and I went to this pub last night for a drink around 9:30pm. When we arrived it was a bit quiet and "dead" and I wondered why since it looked like a great traditional English pub on the outside. Girl behind bar was pleasant and polite. After buying our drinks we sat down and enjoyed our drinks. After... More

Not eaten here for a while, however the food coming from the kitchen looks OK. It's a traditional pub but it's a little dark inside, could do with brightening up a bit. Not keen on dogs in a place when people are eating.

The pub is in a great location, and has a traditional fire burning to warm you up on chilly days. We went for lunch, and although the menu was quite small with only a couple of vegetarian options, it was good traditional pub grub.

We all enjoyed our food today. Served by friendly staff. My mum enjoyed her lamb stew. We had the Cajun chicken. A great afternoon spent in this lovely pub. The music was very good too. Not to be missed.

This is an old-fashioned pub with no airs and graces, just friendly staff,a roaring fire ,and superb food.My husband said the gammon was the best he had tasted for a long time, and I had the home-made lamb stew which was delicious...and the prices were very reasonable.I also really liked the fact that it was not at all touristy...hard to come by... My family of two adults, two teens and a dog often go here for a meal, it is a place we know the dog is welcome and the food is good. Just your typical pub grub, with a wide choice on the menu and has always been ok never really had a bad meal. One criticism is the plates they... More

JUst outside the hustle and bustle of the town on two levels. Keeps a good cellar and food was sensibly priced and decent quality and portions. Real ale was well served with clean glasses and correct measures. A nice relief from the touristy places around the area.

Worth a visit when in this area especially for food, we had a few drinks here too. The steak pudding is especially nice accompanied by a good portion of veg and chips. Staff nice too. Whilst I appreciate the area is dog friendly this pub had a visit from quite a few which if you have a allergy this can... More

If your on a short brake and after an authentic home cooked pub grub this is the place to come. A lot of the other places in Windermere play on the fact it's tourists and charge inflated prices for poor food. The John peel is good value and excellent food friendly staff. Try and finish the gammon steak a full... More
