Lovely food amidst the collection

Lovely cafe with nice food served downstairs in the cafe of the museum. It is a pity they don't remind you that if you are a member you get money off your bill! Well served, tasty and we were not disappointed, although the afternoon tea looked a bit expensive. We always enjoy their food, but I... read more

As another review said....much is made of this cafe...so I was looking forward to good food and service.None of which happened...long wait for meal...shoddy presentation of food (dead salad and relish spilling off edge of plate and cold chips)...and staff who either didn't seem to know where the food orders should go or were just not motivated enough...the floor and... We dropped in to have a couple of coffees and a scone. Much is made of the exclusive nature of this cafe but frankly we thought it was nothing particularly special. Yes, what we had was OK, served at table reasonably quickly, but the floor had bits of food on it and the tables weren't clean. It was also a... More

During our tour of this exquisite museum my wife and I decided to have a late morning breakfast at their in-house café. We were seated and greeted by three levels of service personnel before our server took our order. My wife ordered toast with scrambled eggs on the side. I ordered the meat Panini with back bacon and sausage, but... More

We are regular visitors to Cafe Bowes, it used to be excellent but just lately we have been disappointed. Today we went for an anniversary lunch. The pie was unavailable so my husband chose the curry. He was disappointed when there was no rice, just a bowl of curry with a small naan bread which we assume had been microwaved... More

Last time we visited Cafe Bowes we were ignored and had to wait over twent minutes to get served ,so we walked out.Bce=ause the menu looks good,we thought we would give the cafe a second try a year later. We sat down at a table which had not been cleared - most were in a similar state - and to... More

We were lucky to get a window table on a busy day - clearly a well-known place to come for lunch. We ordered hot drinks and sandwiches, which were mostly good. I enjoyed my corned beef (called something else) and cheese panini, my friend's sandwich had generous amounts of ham but her husband was not that keen on the open... More

Came here on Good Friday to visit the museum so we thought we'd have lunch in their cafe. I ordered a prawn sandwich and my partner ordered a cheese and pickle sandwich. The staff were very good, and the cafe was nicely decorated, but the sandwiches were a big let down. My prawn sandwich was not what I expected at... More
