We have eaten here before and whilst not considering the Cafe Bowes particularly outstanding, we have previously found it adequate. However, certainly not on our last visit. We anticipated it being busy...after all it was lunchtime in the middle of summer so obviously you would expect a large number of customers. We didn't have to wait too long before our... More

On a trip to the Bowes Museum last week we decided to eat about 1 o'clock. Despite this being the 'busy ' period we were impressed by the unflustered service, lovely view (we had a table by one of the front windows) but most of all the quality of the food. The soup and the beef panini being outstanding. We... More

Visited cafe bowes with my mum. We both went for the smoked haddock chowder which was fantastic and came served with some freshly baked bread. I agree with past comments that the menu is on the pricier side however the quality of the food was very high. Would definitely return!

It's was ok is the best I can say, disappointing food and quite expensive for what it was, had better at many other places. Had the yorkshire rarebit which had this grey tasteless gunk on (was supposed to be a bechamel sauce.

A couple of friends and I frequently go to the café during the year as a place to eat when travelling between Darlington and Carlisle. The staff are always friendly, obliging (for instance getting us "breakfast type food" outwith usual serving time). The daily specials are interesting and the usual lunch choices do not get boring (despite our frequent visits).... More

We had to ask to be served. Our orders came in dribs and drabs. There were lots of uncleared tables and staff obviously were under stress. They were still very pleasant . Food nothing out of the ordinary and (as I suppose to be expected in a sort of captive audience way ) a bit over priced.£2.20 for a small glass of... More

Good for a respite whilst looking around the museum. Excellent coffee and snacks . Had a bacon sandwich when the cafe opened at 10.00 am

A lovely place to eat, although maybe a little pricey for some, reading some reviews about a stale sandwich, they should have complained, it would have been willingly sorted out. The scones are delicious and the fish chowder superb and very helpful and pleasant staff. All in all a good experience. I am local to Barnard Castle and have eaten... More

Excellent. Friendly staff; a good atmosphere and delicious food. It is a wonderful place to meet friends and use as an interruption when exploring the rooms of the museum.

Found this to be a but pricey for what you got, I ordered a beef sandwich expecting it to large and it wasn't. The portions are small. One good thing about this place the tea is lovely !
