Poor service and lack of food

We arrived at the cafe and within 5 minutes somebody took our order and got us drinks. However, it was only 1:30 and they had already run out of most of the food! There were no vegetarian options which was a problem since two if our party were. The waiter offered them a cheese sandwich! In the end... read more

Have been a couple of times but only for tea and cake. Cannot fault what we have had to eat or drink. However, as is all too common in UK cafes and restaurants these days, there were so many dirty tables despite there being more than half a dozen staff around. Staff were friendly, possibly students/holiday staff, but did not... More

After observing the antics of the magnificent mechanical swan within the museum we decided to round off our visit with a beverage of some sort and perhaps a cake or scone. We had to wait awhile for a table but that is by the bye, the café can only operate with the space and facilities available. The tea was pleasant... More

Called in at cafe Bowes after walking around the museum grounds , all we wanted was a cup of tea , as last time I was here the food was terrible , we entered the cafe and stood waiting for a staff member to greet and seat us , the cafe was full except for a table in the window... More

Our second visit, we remembered it from a couple of years back and were not disapointed. The Cheese scones seemed to be popular as they were sold out, and we seemed to hear most customers ordering them. My tip would to visit after visiting this fab museum

We visited today after the YSL exhibition. We waited a bit too long to be seated but got served quickly when we were by a very pleasant waitress. We just had coffee and cake and it was fine but could have been better. Generally the prices were fine but I think £1 for half a pint of cordial is a... More

we had been to the Yves saint Laurent exhibition (first class by the way) and called into the café for afternoon tea. the food was a good selection and well presented but the service was struggling. we had to request serviettes. knives and milk all of which should be automatic. I counted 9 visible staff serving and 7 tables occupied.

Consistently great food served in a pleasant, busy cafe by friendly staff. Freshly prepared dishes made from local ingredients. Limited menu, but often specials offered.

Called at the Café Bowes when visiting the museum for the YSL exhibition. As it was during school holidays, the café was packed but still got good food and speedy service. Good choice of food, soups, sandwiches platters etc. The ploughmans lunch was well received and had some unusual black (charcoal flavour) cheese as well as pork pie, scrummy ham,... More

After visiting the YSL exhibition we ate in the cafe, planning to have coffee but decided on lunch when we realised the time. We both chose smoked haddock and leek chowder, which arrived with a warm bread bun. The flavour was delicious with plenty of fish in the chowder. The staff were very friendly with quick efficient service, all chatty... More
