So very ordinary!

The museum is in a most attractive garden setting and one would hope that the cafe would try to serve up something special, even just to include a couple of dishes which would make the visit memorable. However there was nothing on the menu which showed the slightest bit of initiative. What a... read more

After visiting the YSL exhibition we ate in the cafe, planning to have coffee but decided on lunch when we realised the time. We both chose smoked haddock and leek chowder, which arrived with a warm bread bun. The flavour was delicious with plenty of fish in the chowder. The staff were very friendly with quick efficient service, all chatty... More

Arrived at the cafe at 12.10 thinking we had plenty of time for lunch for our 1pm booking for YSL exhibition. Our menu order was taken promptly by a very polite and presentable young man. 10 mins later our wine arrived. My partner had ordered the chowder an I ordered the welsh rarebit with a side of chips (as advertised... More

Three of us had a delicious meal in Cafe Bowes. One member of our party had the comprehensive afternoon tea, another had some sort of rarebit and I had goat and tomato tartlets. The afternoon tea comprised of sandwiches, scone with cream/jam and three desserts - too much for my mother who offered two of her puddings to us so... More

I have been to the Bowes Cafe a few times, but this time was a waste of money. The service was not poor- it was missing! No-one came to our table after we had received our food & we were there for nearly 2 hours. There were only 3 choices of main meals or sandwiches & 1 choice of soup.... More

I have just returned from a visit to Bowes Museum with my daughter to see the Yves Saint Lauren exhibition. We arrived at 9.45am for the 10am YSL tour and I had hoped to enjoy some quality mother and daughter time by having lunch together at Café Bowes, then continue to browse the museum and watch the magnificent mechanical swan... The cafe is located on the end of the imposing museum building. There are comfy seats around the edges of the room, and tables and chairs in the centre. Table service is efficient, if not particularly fast, from well presented staff. We had coffee and cake in the afternoon, and everything was very good quality at average prices. The lunch... More

As another review said....much is made of this cafe...so I was looking forward to good food and service.None of which happened...long wait for meal...shoddy presentation of food (dead salad and relish spilling off edge of plate and cold chips)...and staff who either didn't seem to know where the food orders should go or were just not motivated enough...the floor and... Lovely cafe with nice food served downstairs in the cafe of the museum. It is a pity they don't remind you that if you are a member you get money off your bill! Well served, tasty and we were not disappointed, although the afternoon tea looked a bit expensive. We always enjoy their food, but I am not sure that... More

We dropped in to have a couple of coffees and a scone. Much is made of the exclusive nature of this cafe but frankly we thought it was nothing particularly special. Yes, what we had was OK, served at table reasonably quickly, but the floor had bits of food on it and the tables weren't clean. It was also a... More
