A haven on a wet morning

We had friends over for the weekend and having walked around town we were in need of a coffee break. We had never been into Clarendon's before so upon entering the shop we were delighted to see a roaring fire with seats available near it. The coffee was excellent with a wide choice of strengths. My son ordered the baked Brie and my husband toasted tea cake. My husband and I wanted a cream scone but no scones left hence the toasted tea cake for my husband. Appears to be a habit of Clarendon's as we visited again a few days ago, earlier than before. One fruit scone left, so all fighting over it (not... More

Visited for cake and coffee one Monday late afternoon. I love the coffee cake! Nice to see the original silver teapots are still in use. Vast choice of teas! Always a nice atmosphere.

Called into Barnie to visit 3 shops but it was too cold to walk far. Very windy. Decided we needed Coffee. We wandered along to Clarendons and ordered 2 filter coffees, a toasted T cake and a Bacon buttie. Good coffee, great Tcake and very good Bacon buttie. Next visit we're trying the full breakfast.

We happened upon this cafe when we found ourselves unable to travel home due to the snow. We were cold and wet, fairly stressed with 2 young children and just before closing time. We found the cafe very warm and welcoming. (Hot chocolate was just what was needed!) The owners and staff were extremely helpful by finding phone nos of... More

Little gem. After a morning at the Bowes Museum we were looking for some much needed refuelling and (thankfully) stumbled across Clarendon's. The staff were friendly and smiley, nothing was too much trouble and they seemed to genuinely enjoy their work which was refreshing. Struggling to decide what to have, we opted for their afternoon tea (which doesn't need to... More

if you are visiting Barnard Castle and want something to eat, I highly recommend Clarendon's Cafe. We called in for a late lunch and it was full. The menu is wide and varied, with a specials board, making it difficult to make your choice. I had the bacon, black pudding and stilton baguette and my wife had the Wensleydale cheese... More
