A friendly efficient characterful experience

We chose The Chequers Inn based on its very good reviews and we were not disappointed. Our son had driven up from Exeter and we down from North Yorkshire so all needed sustenance and a rest. Lovely family walk taking in farmland, canal and woods followed by a cracking Saturday lunch at The Chequers Inn. It is a tried and tested way of de-stressing after a working week and if there is a better way I would like to hear it. This pub delivers on both old pub experience and gastropub dining whilst managing to remain... More

Arrived late afternoon to settle in as we were booked for dinner and bed and breakfast. Very warm welcome and we were taken to our bedroom and asked if we would like a jug of fresh milk instead of the UHT pots provided with the tea/coffee making facilities, which was a nice touch. We declined as we decided to sit... More

Blimey!, were some of the previous reviews eating here. Quality restaurant food here. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, attentive, very polite staff. Very well stocked bar and wine list. Seared scallops to die for. The steaks was superb, we asked for them cooked differently and they were spot on. Complementary bread and water, nice touch. Great desserts, good choice. Treat yourselves, you... More

The Chequers Inn had been recommended by friends and so we paid a visit on a Monday. This is obviously a popular venue as it was fairly busy - for a weekday lunchtime - and certainly has many positive reviews. However, it took an age to be shown a table after getting drinks and a menu from the bar. Having... More

We have eaten here before, but today was very disappointing. We were shown to our table and given just 1 menu, we weren't advised about the set menu and only overheard this from another table. The service was very lacking and extremely slow, especially as the place wasn't busy. It would seem work is going on and during our lunch... More

The surroundings are lovely, and yes it is a very cosy, quintessentially English pub. The barman made me a very tasty Bloody Mary too, but the food was very disappointing. The bun my mushrooms were served in was very burnt, and the salad etc served along side it was very uninspiring. My friend's fish and chips were nothing special either... More

We have visited this Inn on a many occasions for functions and meals and have never been disappointed with the friendly welcome and excellent menu. If you are considering a meal here then it might be advantageous to pre-book as this an understandably popular eatery.

Met friends "half way" for Sunday lun and we all thoroughly enjoyed our food and the experience of eating next to a roaring fire in the bar-as we have a little dog. It was very dog friendly- in the time we were there - must have been ~12 dogs came and went (with their owners) and the place was vibrant.... More
