Impromptu visit

My wife and I visited the Blue Ball whilst house hunting in Rutland. We were greeted by the bar man who stopped his conversation to welcome us which was a refreshing change!! Booked this pub for a Sunday meal to finish off a long walk in the beautiful countryside close by. It was immediately welcoming (jazz trio playing in the bar) The selection of traditional beers and wines was very good. Although we arrived half an hour early we were immediately shown to our table highlighting the fact they don't try and... More

We came across this country pub following a walk over the Easter weekend at nearby Rutland Water. Fully agree with the reviews on here that say how welcoming it is. There was lots of choice and I would gladly have eaten anything placed in front of me - it all sounded so appealing. It being lunch time we kept it... More

The Blue Ball Pub is a lovely homely country pub. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. The food was excellent and beautifully cooked. The service was quick and staff attentive, food was reasonably priced and plentiful. This was our second visit and we will definitely return!

My daughter treated me for Mother's Day lunch and it was super. Our table was between the bar and the wood fire which was sociable and cosy. Another reviewer commented on the cold draught from the entrance but this wasn't a problem when everyone was in for the first of three sittings this particular afternoon. It is March after all!... We ate here on Mothering Sunday, on the first of three sittings that they had. The reason for us choosing the Blue Ball was that my parents had eaten there on a couple of week day lunchtimes and had great food and a good experience. The pub itself is a great mismatch of rooms and odd furniture, typical of such... More

Such great reviews,,,we were perhaps unlucky. To start with it appeared that they couldn't find our booking. We were seated in a very cold place opposite and close to the front door. The starter was wonderful. But my roast beef was tough and the roast potatoes and yorkshire puds were mediocre; ( I didn't tell my daughter as she was... More

17th century pub restaurant, where it looks worn, is because it's how it should look for a traditional, and obviously loved place, low ceilings, beams, fire, separate bar and eating are and they really know their beer and wine. Great from the moment we walked in. Really friendly staff, we were greeted immediately, were asked if we had booked and... More

Lovely Saturday lunch after a very muddy 5 mile walk. Even though the pub had just opened all the fires were lit and the place had a good atmosphere. Very warm and friendly welcome and the dog was also welcome in the drinks bar. Landlady and staff all extremely nice and the food was pretty good too. Very nice inside... More
