Friday night out with friends

Our first visit since the official opening under MPW. Our friends had been recently for a Sunday lunch and found it very good. Reading some of the comments on TA the internals are somewhat eclectic but I think the consensus was different but on the whole refreshing. On the night we asked for a... read more

Our first visit since the official opening under MPW. Our friends had been recently for a Sunday lunch and found it very good. Reading some of the comments on TA the internals are somewhat eclectic but I think the consensus was different but on the whole refreshing. I have lived locally and been many times to the black boy whilst growing up, this we were booked for a boxing day lunch with the family and a little one. The staff were lovely & pleasant and amused by the little one, knowing that it has recently been taken over by MPW and we enjoy good food & cooking... More

Don't be put off by negative reviews, if the Christmas day dinner was an example of what was on offer then good food and good service were high on the scale. For the same average price of £65 per head on Christmas day as a lot of other good food pubs (not the cheaper pub chain offers!), we enjoyed a... More

Terrible place, bad atmosphere, bad decor, bad seats and food to match. The service was appalling and they could even get fish and chips right, apparently mushy peas are too difficult and if you complain it's tough! Avoid the place at all costs, Marco putting his name to the place is just a marketing stunt he clearly has no input.

Had a late dinner there last night and it was a wonderful surprise. We arrived late and from the moment we arrived the service and the staff were attentive polite and tidy. I have eaten there before MPW had taken it over and the transformation of the menu is total. I had duck egg on brioche followed by liver and... More

We have now been several times since MPW has been at the helm. So, mainly good news. BUT Please fix those entrance doors. Put an outside flood light on before someone falls down the steps. Get the lighting above the tables fixed, the glare spoils the atmosphere.

Marco Pierre White has recently refurbished this pub. First impressions- dark!! Odd door mat flooring, granny's table clothes and goodbye to proper real ale. The bar has been pretty much removed to squash in more tables. I suspect this may alienate locals. Food in the end was good but as a vegetarian I was made to feel very embarrassed that... More

We visited this restaurant to celebrate a birthday and it was a very enjoyable evening. The menu was particularly good and for the most part very well cooked. The wooden seating was a bit of a concern but not enough to spoil the evening, maybe the owner could invest in some seat cushions to solve the problem. The restaurant did... More

As previous reviewer, couldn't get in the door and the only seating was on an awkward bench. Food was nice but over priced. UGghhh the decor is horrible. Conservatory had tables with what looked liked my grandmas table clothes on and the pictures were really modern. Looked liked someone who was trying to be ultra funky but just got it... More
