Lovely traditional pub with above average food

Characterful pub in central Hay with friendly staff and good food. Initially fazed by the soup of the day (fennel & coconut!) we instead plumped for some food from the light menu. The portions were very generous & filling and my chilli was lovely. If I am in the area again I'd definitely revisit.

Loved the atmosphere, food and the staff at this pub. Although it was a really busy period (the Hay Festival was in full swing) they coped really well. The food was particularly good.

Ordered 3 plates of sub-pub food - spag bol, chilli and a lamb stew. I sucked that up: £42 without drinks. Stew arrived. Chef hadn't bothered to wipe sauce from edge of bowl. I searched for the lamb. Found 5 small morsels. Complained. Waiter assured me that chef/owner was 100% comfortable with this. I wasn't. Additional bowl of stew gracelessly... More

Lovely interior and a warm feel. Friendly staff and a cozy hour spent over a few pints. Excellent drink selection.

We were four weary walkers on a trek along Offas Dyke, picture last of the summer wine and you're close!!! We were staying in the b and b opposite and too tired to wander anywhere else to search for an evening meal so chose the Boar .How lucky were we!! The beer was great, the food excellent but Scarlet ,... More

We recently stayed in Hay-on-Wye for 2 nights at The Bear which, incidentally, is a superb B&B, one of the best we have ever stayed in. We had a stroll around Hay in the afternoon we arrived looking for somewhere to eat in the evening. For us, The Blue Boar stood apart fjrom the other pubs in Hay as it... More

I was in Hay for just one night and both the tourist information office and my B&B host recommended Blue Boar Pub when I asked where I could get a typical Welsh meal. Both ladies mentioned it was on the pricier side but I didn't mind. I wanted to try local cuisine at a local spot. It was obvious from... More

Visited here during our mini break to Hay. We had stopped for a drink and thought it would be lovely to come back for our anniversary and have dinner. We sat and shared delicious camembert for starter, but then the barman came over as 2 ladies came in and they had booked our particular table and insisted on having it.... More
