lovely, cosy and welcoming

Real fires, nice atmosphere. Food reasonably priced although more vegetarian options are needed. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Visited Hay on the way to Cardiff for the Wales v England 6 Nations match just for something to do, stopped at this place for lunch. We were treated really well by the staff and even told there was a large party in so we should order quickly, they didn't have to do that! Food was great, the Welsh Rarebit... More

Had lunch here with a few friends the portions where small and expensive the kind of price you'd expect in a good restaurant in the city. The staff are friendly and the pub is nice but really it didn't stand up to its reputation

We had lunch here. I used to live local so have been here many times. On this occasion food was good, but a little overpriced. All was great until a member off staff (I think it was kitchen staff) decided to sit on the customers side of the bar on his mobile and have a long conversation with I think... More

Busy Valentines evening, restaurant and bar all fully booked but stayed for a drink, bar staff were extremely pleasant and very knowledgable about the drinks, I had a really tasty Penderyn gin and the publicans daughter was very informative. Will definitely return again and will stay for food this time!

Today we went to the Blue Boar in Hay-on-Wye for Sunday lunch and received a very warm welcome as soon as we walked in. The place was packed but they still managed to find us a table for two and we ordered two roast beef dinners. Considering they were so busy the staff were marvellous being attentive and friendly and... More

Lovely welcoming feeling when you enter the pub. Ordered sandwiches and drinks, coffee arrived, but after 35 minutes our sandwiches had still not arrived. Basically our order had not gone through, staff were very apologetic and offered us half of our initial layout back. When the sandwiches arrived, they were filling and thoroughly delicious.

This was a whisker away from getting the full five stars from me. If the beef had been carved slightly thicker and was a little rarer, it would have been full marks. With a warm welcome from the friendly young staff and a roaring open fire, we were soon enjoying a well-kept pint. Our dog was one of many welcomed... More

A wheelchair and dog were welcomed by the young and attentive hosts. We had a generous and classic Sunday roast in front of a coal fire. Definitely coming back.
