This thatched gem of a pub was taken over in November 2009 having been closed for 7 months. Now it is a real local pub with Cask Marque ales and a fantastic British menu. There is a bar, restaurant and private dining room offering a lovely friendly atmoshpere and really good food that is great value for money. There is plenty of outside seating for sunny days so come along and try us again.

Service was frrightful - forgotten orders, very slow etc - and not just for our table; we had to listen to complaining customers across the room. The food was average, to say the least, and over-priced. It had also been re-heated, with a congealed and muddy sauce. No wonder they give out vouchers! We have been here a few times... More

Found this hidden treasure on the internet and will definately be returning. Had a memorable evening. We chose this venue as we had family visiting the UK from Italy who wanted to eat in a traditional English pub/restaurant and they left totally impressed with their experience. Both the food and friendly service was top class in stunning traditional surroundings.

Traditional decor and a warm welcome made lunching here very relaxed. Good real ale and pleasant wines complemented excellent food and satisfied every one. The service was attentive although the establishment was busy. There was plenty of choice in the menu. However I would say the dishes veered towards fine dining rather than hearty pub grub. We had delicious food but were disappointed by manageress's attitude when rearranging the table for 10, booked some time ahead, to accommodate guest in a wheelchair and the path leading to the french window access to dining room was uneven paving slabs ending in a 3 inch lift over the door lintel. Not a place to visit with wheelchairs until... More

We had a friend over from Sweden who we took to Highclere Castle. The day before, we looked for a good restaurant closeby and The Red House came top of list. We were an hour early but we were welcome like royalty. The front of house staff is top notch. Waiting service is same standard as Michrllin Restaurants, food was... More

This is my third visit but first for a meal and we were very impressed with the quality and value of the three course set lunch. My wife had the prawn cocktail but with crab in the mayonnaise as a nice twist on a classic. I had the pork rillettes which was gorgeous and full of flavour. The steak and... More

We stumbled across this pub on route from hungerford to Newbury. 5pm on good Friday and it was empty. We ordered a 2 course meal for £13.50 each. What a delightful meal. Excellent presentation and amazing tastes. Highly recommended.

Wow, the chef is a huge talent - the suet pudding with mustard mixed in, kidney lurking in the lush gravy and the tremendous amount of beef with a volcanic horseradish explosion was quite exceptional. The pressure is on to try and recreate it - yikes! The rillet was also scrumptious and the Spring sun allowed us to enjoy drinks... More

The beef burger was incredible! The fish and chips were crispy, succulent and delicious. The service was friendly and attentive as always. And a nice pint of Guinness.

Recently visited this pub for the first time. Décor in pub is really nice. food is opposite. Ordered a mushroom burger(which came with chips). Burger was cold when it arrived. There was no garnish/salad etc and pretty much the entire plate was filled with cold, soggy chips. I think they do this to make a cheap meal, but there were... More
