A magnificent oak-panelled space is the fine dining setting at The George Hotel of Stamford, one of England's greatest coaching inns. A mix of regular locals and hotel guests can always be found relaxing at bare oak tables beneath an eye-catching hand-painted ceiling. In summer, or on mild nights, they like to sit outside under the heated canopy in the ivy-clad courtyard. Open for grand lunches and dinner, the George Hotel Restaurant serves traditional yet imaginative English dishes, specialising in seafood. Lighter daytime dishes such as Dover sole are superceeded at night with heartier meals such as rack of lamb with fresh herbs and redcurrant jelly, and roast English beef carved at the table on a silver trolley. Accompanied by traditional trimmings, of course.

My sister and I were in Stamford as an early celebration for her 50th birthday and forthcoming Wedding. We visited The George in the afternoon on spec and were amazed to find some wonderful seating to enjoy champagne cocktails which arrived with complimentary olives and nuts. You cannot book the Garden Room Restaurant but we were assured that we would... More

The George at Stamford, provided a top notch dining expeience. We booked a lunch time table within the Oak Dining Room, as part of the celebration on our Ruby Wedding Anniversary. Silver Service a wonderful a la carte menu which provided a wide range of choice and a wine list to match. The service from the restaurant staff was second to... More

We had lunch in The Garden Room on a Saturday a couple of weeks before Christmas. There was a queue when we arrived, waiting for the restaurant to open and when it did, it was extremely busy. We were served by several different people and it did get a little complicated. We asked for 3 gins and 2 tonics to... More

Dining in the Oak Room restaurant is a delightful experience, especially at night when the wood paneling, and the silver and candles on the tables make this restaurant unique in the area. Complementing the atmosphere is a serious English a la carte menu with everything from lobster to Dover sole to roast duck and roast sirloin of local beef from... More

If you want a quick cheap lunch, look somewhere else. This hotel really does have class, bars and pub meals to a fantastic looking restaurant all with an ambience that you have to pay extra for. We had lunch with my sister and brother in law while visiting from Australia and were impressed with the history and quality of the... More

We ate lunch in the York Bar. The steak sandwich was laden with onions and fried vegetables which were slimy and unpleasant. I had to scrape them all off and remove the bread as it was also slimy. The steak was OK, nothing special. For around £12 it was not a good deal.

A very relaxed lunch today in the courtyard style restaurant which is open all day. The food was of excellent quality served in decent portions by friendly professional staff. Not the cheapest in town but as in everything, you get what you pay for. Couldn't fault anything.

We had planned lunch out in Stamford to celebrate an anniversary at a different restaurant, but they called in the morning to say their restaurant was closed because of technical difficulties, and they had transferred our booking to their other establishment close by, however when we arrived we were very disappointed, all very well for a pub lunch, but not...
