Description: A magnificent oak-panelled space is the fine dining setting at The George Hotel of Stamford, one of England's greatest coaching inns. A mix of regular locals and hotel guests can always be found relaxing at bare oak tables beneath an eye-catching hand-painted ceiling. In summer, or on mild nights, they like to sit outside under the heated canopy in the ivy-clad courtyard. Open for grand lunches and dinner, the George Hotel Restaurant serves traditional yet imaginative English dishes, specialising in seafood. Lighter daytime dishes such as Dover sole are superceeded at night with heartier meals such as rack of lamb with fresh herbs and redcurrant jelly, and roast English beef carved at the table on a silver trolley. Accompanied by traditional trimmings, of course.

Our previous experiences of afternoon tea at various places have always left us thinking our eyes are bigger than our bellies, but not on this occasion. At £20 per person we were left feeling disappointed. When our waitress bought over our tea stand, we sat and waited a few minutes thinking another was on its way. However this was not the case.... More

I visited The George with three friends during a week long cultural trip to Lincolnshire. The building is an old coaching inn with many beautiful and traditional features. Many of the rooms have wooden paneling and there are huge fireplaces to keep guests warm in the winter. There are two restaurants within the building, the main restaurant which is more... More

It's a hard review; the food, service and ambience were all fine. So why not full scores? I think it is targeted at an older generation. It attracts the 60+ Age group, with the odd exception on family gatherings. If you are in one of these groups you will probably give it 5 starts across the board. Younger and like... More

We dined in the wonderful oak panelled restaurant, as a late lunch on the way back from holiday. Though not formally dressed, we were welcomed in and seated very quickly and a very pleasant lunch ensued, topped by wonderful profiteroles with lots of chocolate sauce, then coffee with home made truffles which were super. It was the staff that caught... More

My husband and I came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We chose the restaurant because it is a very special room. The service was excellent from having a drink in the lounge to the coffees at the end. We asked to move our table because our neighbouring table were loud, and they moved us without fuss - all very... More

Although quite expensive, the main course is such that it is sufficient. On both occasions we have been recently, this is all we could manage topped off with a coffee. The choice is wide, including a cold buffet with delicious looking prepared salads. As there is no booking in this restaurant, you need to be quite early to guarantee a... More

Classical setting, dress code (men requested to wear a jacket), gorgeous food and great wine. All in all a lovely meal.

I visisted The George recently for lunch - we went to to the Garden Room which is less formal and really enjoyed the lunch. 3 of us had Salads from the Buffet at £12.80 - help yourself to about ten different salad selections and one of us had sea bass at £18.05. The service is good and the staff helpful.... More

Please accept my apologies for the confusion when you rang. The formal dining room offers the “Light Lunch” menu and I believe that is why we booked you into the restaurant, but we should have checked. However it was great to read that you had a wonderful lunch with us. Thank you. More

Dined here the other lunchtime, with my mother to celebrate her birthday. Unfortunately, it is not quite the place it used to be. Visually, it is impressive, although the garden room furniture, is certainly tired, and long over due for replacement. Menu, bit same old, same old....I remember some of the dishes from my childhood, and thats 40 years ago!!!!... More

Good to hear that you enjoyed your meal, but I was concerned to read about the staff’s attitude. I promise you that we receive nothing but wonderful comments about our staff so this will be investigated, but please accept my sincere apologies. Our menu changes every season but there are dishes we keep on because they are so popular. Our... More

There is simply no need to write war and peace for this review as the food tasted lovely, looked lovely and the courtyard was a great location to enjoy the meal in too.
