Description: A magnificent oak-panelled space is the fine dining setting at The George...
A magnificent oak-panelled space is the fine dining setting at The George Hotel of Stamford, one of England's greatest coaching inns. A mix of regular locals and hotel guests can always be found relaxing at bare oak tables beneath an eye-catching hand-painted ceiling. In summer, or on mild nights, they like to sit outside under the heated canopy in the ivy-clad courtyard. Open for grand lunches and dinner, the George Hotel Restaurant serves traditional yet imaginative English dishes, specialising in seafood. Lighter daytime dishes such as Dover sole are superceeded at night with heartier meals such as rack of lamb with fresh herbs and redcurrant jelly, and roast English beef carved at the table on a silver trolley. Accompanied by traditional trimmings, of course.

Good food but high prices

It's a formal and expensive eating experience. The food is lovely but a little old fashioned and stuffy. Would be a great place to take my parents!

Ate at the George last night with a group of friends. Superb. Tempura prawns light and delicious. Sirloin of beef probably one of the best ever tasted, cut from a whole cooked piece. The presentation was outstanding. Perfection. Wonderful selection of desserts from a trolley. Service impeccable. A great meal with fantastic company, what a treat. Would definitely return even... Met up with friends for a catch up and lunch at the George. Lovely food, service a little slow and doesn't quite match up to the atmosphere. Beware asking for mineral water - served without a bottle and charged £2.20 per glass. tasted very like tap water to me!!

The George is classic, classy, chic and gorgeous. I have eaten in the bar, the York room and the Oak panelled dining room. Never disappointed, always satisfied-like Winston Churchill "with the best". A timeless establishment catering for everyone. The service is fantastic, the food and choice of food and wine extensive and the cooking is out of this world. This... More

Lovely afternoon tea in pretty exclusive surroundings. There was a wedding on at the same time and the weather was fine so it was pretty busy but service was still good. £28.50 each is a little steep but this was the champagne option. This included a round of mixed sandwiches, 4 small cakes and 1 scone with jam and cream... More

Olde Worldeformer coaching inn with oodles of history, fine food, luxurious accomodation and courteous and friendly staff. What more to say! Oh yes, lovely gardens and courtyard, and an inglenook fireplace with a real log fire in the cooler months. Settle into a big comfy armchair and relax!

We like it here ! Its our fourth visit but this time we sat out in the courtyard as it was nice weather. It was a special anniversary meal and for special, the George doesn't disappoint. Service, as always was top notch. Very attentive - Matthew even remembered us from a time before. Food was excellent - my only gripe... More

There is much character and charm here and it's central position in town is great. Our only complaint was the lack of coffee making facilities in the room and when room service for 2 cups of tea comes in at £8.80, it is an expensive omission. Otherwise our room (17) was well appointed with a lovely 4 poster and a... More

We stopped off for lunch in the Garden Restaurant on our way to Suffolk. It is 12 months since my last visit and the experience is as good as ever with lovely food served by well trained staff in lovely surroundings. The orchids on each table is a stunning addition in this well run hotel.
