Casual atmosphere and hearty tradition Norwegian fare

My partner and I opted to dine here for our first night in Bergen based on forum recommendations. Great choice - the place is a small unassuming local that we recognized only by the little penguin. Had dinner a this cozy resturant and it was fairly good, with nice big portions of what looks like home-made food. Our host recommended it for "grannie" type food and the place does stand up to its reputation. Menu changes every day, and the variety is limited but it looked like everything was tasty. Nice lively atmosphere.

Nice place but crowded. Food was good and staff was helpful, but could have used one or two more staff to help out.

No pretention here. It is Nowegian pub food...that's it. They have a huge selection of Norwegian beer from all over the country. The waiter/bartender was helpful in describing the beers to aid us in our selections. I had slow cooked reindeer served with mash potatoes and carrots while my wife had a traditional Nowegian fish and macaroni pie. It had... More

Hip experience. Visited by all kind of people. The menu is not very long but what we tasted was good honest Norwegian type of dishes.

I had my best meal during the week in Norway here. They have a good variety of Norwegian entrees and a very good selection of craft beers. I had the fish stew which was nothing like my image of a stew but tasted great. It was basically mashed up fish blended with mashed potatoes. My wife's cheese plate was also... More

I visited Pingvinen for lunch. The interior is so charming: vintage-ish cloth tablecloths and kitschy decor. The lapskaus (Norwegian stew) with salted lamb was very good. Some other items on the menu looked great, but they struck me as being too large for lunch. The service was fantastic and friendly, and the prices are also great. Definitely worth a try... More

This cafe is chilled out and easy going. I found the staff relaxed, friendly and helpful. The fish stew was hearty and filling. Cool photos on the walls.

We ate at this place after reading good reviews in Lonely Planet. We weren't disappointed: the staff is very friendly, the food is very good and prices are correct (for Norway :-))

We had a great time at this bar. Delicious norwegian dinner, scandinavian beer and an excellent atmosphere. We didn't want to leave! Afterwards we went to Vaskeriet and it was just the perfect night! 100% recommendable for couples and groups of friends, not for families.
