This famous traditional cafe with its 130 year history was first opened in 1876 and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular Meeting point for leading lights in the world of art, literature, politics and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotzki. Then, like today, the legendary literature cafe was a meeting point for all ages. Unique architecture combined with the best coffee specialities, classic Viennese cuisine and finest home-made pastries make every visit a special experience.

Perfect Cafe and Truly Spectacular Gluten Fee Offerings

It is hard to say much that hasn’t been said about the joy of having a cup of coffee and a pastry with good conversation at the Café Central. But what we were particularly joyous about was finding several beautiful and tasty gluten free pastries. In fact there were several gluten free offerings... read more

It is one of those places you read about with all its history and have to visit to see what it is all about. The interior is beautiful and the display of cakes mouth-watering. We did not find the prices exhorbitant and the cakes were delicious.

This historical coffee-house has been the center of Viennese social life for generations, located on the Herrengasse and prominent in the list of fine eateries and meeting-places. The apple strudel was sublime and the glazed chocolate bombe a cake-lovers dream. While not the most modest establishment; certainly the most well-known if not the overall best.

The long walk to get here was definately worth it. Just the decor and atmosphere of the cafe is enough to curb your appetite but when you gaze at the beautiful display of cakes then you have to have a piece of that rich sacher torte and apfel strudel! Both were delicious along with the melange coffee. If I go... More

Came here especially for brunch and loved it. Got to sit outside as horse carriages passed by and enjoyed our brunch platter and huge sized pancakes with prosecco. Give it a try, the cafe's interior is worth a look too

Great range of cakes! Been to this cafe several times already, and the service is horrible. Or should I say the waiters' service depends on where you are from... I think I'd have to order a takeaway the next time I visit this place.

As Vienna is the home of coffee it is only fair that the traditional Viennese coffee house is identified as the perfect place to wind away an hour or two in the splendour of one of the most traditional of all coffee houses! Café Central has a somewhat bohemian appearance but the that belies the efficient and effective service. Coffee... More

Fabulous place to have food whether it be a breakfast, evening meal or coffee and cake. Very traditional atmosphere and gorgeous surroundings. Very reasonable prices and the Wiener Schnitzel here is lovely

Getting inside this place, it's like going back in time. Cakes are amazing and the coffee is lovely. I would recommend anyone to experience it.

Just as the title says. We had an evening meal here. The meal was very good, Wiener Schnitzel, delicious, could not manage a sweet. Even though they looked so inviting. The cafe was due to close at 9pm for a private function, but we were not rushed at all. Have been here before and will return next time when in... More

Staying in Inner City

Neighborhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
