This famous traditional cafe with its 130 year history was first opened in 1876 and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular Meeting point for leading lights in the world of art, literature, politics and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotzki. Then, like today, the legendary literature cafe was a meeting point for all ages. Unique architecture combined with the best coffee specialities, classic Viennese cuisine and finest home-made pastries make every visit a special experience.

Great breakfast or coffee break

This is the best of old-school coffee houses. Love the vaulted ceilings, the lattes are awesome, try some of the original viennese coffees though, you won't regret it.

What I mean by that is, this is more of an attraction than it is a cafe. You won't see any locals there, so if your travel goals include going to local, underground, alternative cafes, then Cafe Central isn't the one for you. But if you want to live the shameless full-out tourist experience, then I strongly recommend this Cafe!... More

While waiting for our tour of the Spanish Riding School, myself, my hubby, and my sister stopped here for breakfast. We were tired, a little hung over, and in some desperate need of coffee. Cafe Central delivered all the pieces to help our morning move along. The server was polite and courteous, the food was very tasty, and the coffee... More

Coffee houses in Vienna are something special for an american. No rush to eat or drink and move on. On the contrary, a cup of coffee and desert and sit as long as you want. We found service excellent and the manager very special. The history of this place is remarkable also. Google it!

Beautiful vaulted ceiling with an awesome menu to match. We loved the Schnitchell and any of their desserts. A bonus one evening was the pianist playing, a totally amazing time. Super busy staff constantly on the go as diners arrive in or leave. Sadly our waiter was showing stress and it did reflect in the way he managed us.

On a recent visit to Vienna, we visited several of the city's famous cafes. Whilst we felt some were slightly over-rated (or perhaps living on past reputation) we were not disappointed by the historic Café Central. With its vaulted ceiling and plush furnishings, the interior alone makes it an interesting pit stop. The cakes were exquisite and the coffee delicious,... More

It is, yes probably the most popular cafe and with its vaulted ceilings and (air conditioned!) space makes for a very pleasant stop. We enjoyed the Viennese Eis Coffee (Espresso/Ice Cream and Whipped Cream or Schlag). Not sure why the Viennese make Schlag just that bit better than oh I don't know, nearly EVERYONE else. It's just really that little... More

This might be one of the most overrated places in Vienna today. Yes, it is nice to sit by the same table Freud has, but the experience you get is far from authentic.

Having just arrived in Vienna we found ourselves outside Cafe Central. Decided to pop in as very warm outside, what a classy traditional coffee house, a reasonable wait for table so decided to grab one in shaded area outsIde. Our grandson wanted to practice his German by ordering iced coffee, beer iced chocolate and strudel with cream and ice cream... More

Staying in Inner City

Neighborhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
