This famous traditional cafe with its 130 year history was first opened in 1876 and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular Meeting point for leading lights in the world of art, literature, politics and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotzki. Then, like today, the legendary literature cafe was a meeting point for all ages. Unique architecture combined with the best coffee specialities, classic Viennese cuisine and finest home-made pastries make every visit a special experience.

Nice ambiance with a history

Beautiful decor inside the cafe. Friendly staff and delicious dishes. My lunch was lovely and watching the crowds made it even more enjoyable.

I went here with my mom. Had a little trouble finding it but it was wonderful. We ate dinner there. I had the breaded chicken and we split apple strudel for dessert. There was a piano player playing and it was super crowded but we didn't have to wait long. Definitely stop here for a bite. You won't be disappointed.

Very popular & expect queues. We visited Vienna in May & even then there were huge queues outside, especially on the only drizzly day. The café atmosphere exudes history & the cakes are delicious. Expect to pay for the privilege but a trip here is a must. Excellent friendly service with great atmosphere.

You enter the cafe and immediately notice the large choice of delicious-looking pastry. The servers show you to your table fairly quickly but ignore you before that. We arrived 15 minutes after the lunch menu so instead of 10,50€ we paid 30€ each for the food. It was tasty, especially the apfelstrudel and coffee, but the main course was not... More

This place looks absolutely beautiful. But that's the only positive thing I can say about it. The service is slow, the waitress was rude and the coffee isn't very nice.

The only cafe that we felt rushed in. Cakes were tasty but smaller than average, and feel this cafe is resting on its laurels a bit

This historic cafe is open daily from 8am-10pm and an excellent choice for any meal or just a snack. There is a wonderful display of patisserie and we really felt quite spoilt for choice. There is regular piano music in the evening which also adds to the atmosphere. We visited several times during our stay at the excellent Radisson Blu... More

The place were beautiful, lots of choices on cake. Not the best cake, but the environment was great.

Step back to the Vienna circle at this coffee house with its numerous luminaries - who used to play chess inside its walls. Decadent and stately atmosphere; delicious coffee and cake in an intriguing Viennese district. Service impeccable; and discard the diet to taste some Viennese specialities!

Staying in Inner City

Neighborhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
