This famous traditional cafe with its 130 year history was first opened in 1876 and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular Meeting point for leading lights in the world of art, literature, politics and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotzki. Then, like today, the legendary literature cafe was a meeting point for all ages. Unique architecture combined with the best coffee specialities, classic Viennese cuisine and finest home-made pastries make every visit a special experience.

Situated in a beautiful building, this café provides nice atmosphere to relax during sightseeing around Vienna. It is supposed to be very touristy and it was full but still didn't feel crowded. Staff was courteous and speak English. The cakes are fantastic and the coffee is good. We tried 2 different cakes and it is something to remember. A bit... More

My friends and I enjoyed this old- world cafe so much we went back twice during our weekend in Vienna. Excellent on all fronts and excellent food. The beautiful gothic space is worth a visit alone. Highly recommended!

If you try once the apple strudel from Cafe Central, you will never forget that taste. There is no such thing I'm enjoying like in this desert. Every time I come to Vienna this cafe is a must stop. The atmosphere and service are great also. Maybe you'lol have to wait in line for table but worth it.

I live in Vienna and when I want to impress visitors, I take them to this café. I am not put off by the fact that there one sees only tourists lining up and enjoying this historic place.

Beautiful cakes, which tasted as good as they looked and smoked salmon and white tomato starter was tasty too. Wine choice by the waiter was good enough for me to buy at the airport. Apple strudel portion was very generous and the service was fine too. Would go back. Interior tasteful.

In a recent visit to Vienna we ducked into the Central Café to get out of the rain. I felt like we stepped back in time. We especially enjoyed the live piano music. We took our coffee in the typical Viennese way and sat our table for a couple hours. It was so delightful we returned the following evening for... More

It was a kind of travel to the imperial times of Austria, Wien. I have been there several times to discover delicious pastries and special coffees. No surprise in this cafe. You can find what you see in the pictures. The waiters are very polite; tables, plates, forks, knifes etc. are very clean; service is fast; atmosphere is great.

We stopped here for a hot drink and some cake. The best thing is that the interior of this place is just incredible to admire - it's one of the places you *should definitely* visit whilst in Vienna. However, the cakes, although looking elaborate were very disappointing. Not sure how the food is here, but if based on the quality... More

Visited this place just last week - and was immediately impressed by the beautiful building. They have a terrace, but I recommend you choose a table inside. In the evenings there is live piano music. The dress code here is business casual. You can also come casual, if you don't like to dress up. The prices are regular for Vienna... More

Staying in Inner City

Neighborhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
