Great atmosphere and lovely staff

We came across this place by accident on our recent trip to Vienna - escaping out of the rain on a wet weekend! The atmosphere is amazing and the place is huge - loads of nooks and crannies all tucked under a beautiful vaulted cellar ceiling! On our first visit we simply sampled the beer and... read more

We came here because of the advertised specials. However after sitting down outside we were told they apply only if we sit inside. It was too stuffy though. The food prices are above average and the food is mediocre. Come here only if you must.

This restaurant is located in the cellar of a building from the 1600's. So it has plenty of atmosphere. The food is ordered at a counter from the 5-6 choices of the day. I went with slices of pork with sauerkraut and a dumpling. It was very filling but it was fairly ordinary, too.

If you are seeking for a place of genuine authenticity and character this is it! A true celar, made of stone and wood, old-fashioned with a vintage atmosphere, the waitress traditionally dressed always at your service with a sweet smile on her face. Local specialties of limitted variety but rich in taste even for the most demamding - don't hesitate... More

Time has stood still at Esterhazykeller! Actually, I love to visit historical places, but Esterhazykeller is not just a historical place, it was founded in 1683 and since then, little has changed. The menu is held traditional, but there are other places in Vienna where the same dishes are much tastier: The Blutwurst (blood sausage) I ordered was dry and... More

We have been eating here with our children on numerous trips we've made to Vienna over the past 20 years, and it never fails to disappoint! Stick to the basic, the schnitzel and potato salad, a beer or two, and you can't go wrong. Hard to find, if you walk past the lane way you'll miss it, however as it's... More

Our group of four happened upon this for a late Sunday lunch and dived in as it is a genuine Keller, a basement venue. A huge labyrinth, about 500 covers, it has been a restaurant since the Turkish siege, almost 400 years. We found a booth and were advised by the athletic waitress it was self service from the food... The place is very interesting, but we gave up after waiting 15 minutes at the table with no service. The only waiter that showed up told us to move from the table. On our 15 minute wait, we noticed that the place is for large tourist groups, so not our favorite kind of restaurant anyways.

Took some friends visiting Vienna for a meal at the Esterhazy Keller. The intention was to show them the ambience of an underground cellar with its ancient arched brick walls. The visit was a spectacular success. My friends loved the atmosphere of the place, the adventure of climbing down the steep entrance stairs and the labyrinth of rooms underground where... More

Staying in Inner City

Neighborhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
