Good solid reliable and tasty food - shame about the cloakroom fee

We came here because it appears to be a Helsinki institution and were not disappointed in that respect. The food is very traditional Finnish and extremely tasty. I frequented Kosmos a lot when I was young, i.e. 40-50 years ago. Then it was a smoky and noisy place with lots of people, much drinking and some eating. But in daytime it did serve excellent lunches. Now Kosmos has aged with me, so it is quiet, distinguished, serves mostly excellent food and the noisy drinkers have (almost) disappeared.... More

It is some time since I last visited Kosmos and I’m afraid, that it will take some time before I will do it again. Service was arrogant and slow (still the waitress actively asked for additional tipping) and the food just average or even bad (the blinies were bitter) and as the finishing touch the reception clerk did not bother... I was taken to this restaurant by a business associate and he indicated this is one of his favourite restaurants with Finnish cuisine. The atmosphere is very charming and with interesting décor. Yes I did have to give up my jacket to the coat check despite my objections - was a nuisance as I had to empty out all my... More

I used to lunch at Kosmos back in the day and haven't been for a couple of years. Finding an hour or so of 'own time' I decided to pop in to this traditional Finnish restaurant, which is on the other side of Mannerheimintie from Stockmann, in Helsinki. I am so glad I went. Accepted, how can one give five... More

Unfortunately the culinary part was forgotten somewhat but even worse was that the service was non-existent -- the waiter was not interested at all. The historical restaurant by it self did not compensate for the bad service level.

I'm in Helsinki quite often and - surprisingly - hadn't made it to Kosmos until a local friend suggested we meet there. I'm glad that he did. The location is central, not far from Main Station or Stockmann department store. When we entered, my coat was taken (warning: there is a €2.50 charge for this). The decor is very traditional... This is one of my favorites in town. The restaurant has been in the same family for decades (I think since 1930´s). Patrons include businessmen and artists, a somewhat peculiar combination. The food and service are impeccable. The food is traditional Finnish and portions are large enough. I have had lunch and dinner here several times and never been disappointed.... More

I always bring all my foreign guests here. It’s timeless and represents Finnish culture at its best: unpretentious yet warm. You gotta try the classic Vorschmack with Duchess Potatoes. Prices are moderate. You always leave there feeling good.

Traditional finnish restaurant with lots of history. Famous finnish artists have been always loyal customers here. Old fashioned original retro style interior. Food is usually good but not so cheap. Service is sometimes good sometimes odd. Reservation recommended.
