Salve and the traditional herrings with mashed potatoes is something to drive from a distance. Nice and homy place, friendly personnel. Perfect.

This place is more like a traditional taverna then a restaurant. The interior would be tacky any other place, but it just makes sense here. Food is traditional Finnish food with fish and meat. Huge services and nice food. Not gourmet in any way, though. The service is quiet, but efficient. Very Finnish.

To understand Salve and to really enjoy the food you need to understand the history: it's been there since the late 1890s, and the clientele used to be sailors. These days you'll find both locals who've been frequenting it for decades and hipsters going for the really authentic Finnish experience – the portions are huge, tasty (without skimping on butter... This is a place where you get what you expect, not sophisticated but good finnish food. Founded in 1897, more for the fisherman as a kiosk and then 30 years later moved to its current place as I told. I tried the deep fried herring and as a starter the garlic rye bread to share. The portions are quite big,... More

Maybe not so many sailors anymore but atmosphere is still there. Excellent food in casual environment. Most famous for herrings and other fish, but they know how to make steaks also. Lunch during week, soup, fish, home cooking or steak. After joining the S-group the prices have gone up, but the food they have managed to keep as it used... More

I went here last year and was not disappointed. I am back in Helsinki and visited twice this week. Great local food, friendly service, reasonably priced for Finland. No complaints at all. Very handy if you are staying in the Radisson Seaside hotel as its just round the corner, a 4 min walk.

This place is worth going on a sunny day and to be seated on the terrace. Unfortunately it is placed next to a busy road but still the herring is very traditional Finnish dish and there is something with the scenery: flea market on one side and naval construction site on the other. And surrounded by the sea. Menu is... More

We came to this place to eat a late lunch. The terrace was open and we sat waiting some ten minutes before realizing we have to order inside. This is fine, but the staff could have informed us, instead of just walking by ignoring us. The terrace has a nice view and atmosphere, but is right on the edge of... More
