Finnish specialities

If you want to taste something that people in Helsinki have been eating a looong time with pleasure, go this restaurant and ask for "Silakat ja muussi". You´ll get a dish that looks simple and it is simple. And delicious! It is herring from baltic sea with mashed potatoes.

This restaurant is a 10min walk from Helsinki's market square through the Observatory Hill. It was founded in 1934 and offers the best of classic Finnish specialities. The food is simple but super tasty, and comes in large portions. Service was quick and friendly, and prices are reasonable for such a nice restaurant. The building doesn't look like much from... We ate there twice during our visit. No nonsense beautifully cooked Finnish food in a very friendly environment and at very reasonable prices. We will be back when next we visit Helsinki. Some guide books give the impression that it's at a distance from the town centre. In fact it was 10 minutes on foot from our hotel beside the... More

This is one of my absolute favorites in Helsinki. A genuine Finnish place with genuine customers and occasional Japanese tourists with Lonely Planets :) Good food, HUGE portions and a selection of some true local classics.

It is not a classic, it is definitely The Classic. Just a walking distance from the city center in the very beautiful part of the beautiful city on Helsinki one can find not so hidden gem of Sea Horse or Sikala (pig sty) as the locals call it. There is nothing pig styish about this very traditional yet relaxed restaurant,... More

Visited Sea Horse once again last may. I had liver which was was excellent and my wife had meatballs, which were not too good (they were almost cold). I give four on overall rating based on previous experiences. Still I would recommend Sea Horse for anyone who basic good food.

One of the oldest and best traditional "old style" restaurants in Helsinki. Very Value for money and worth a visit. Reasonable prices good service. Reserve a table in advance. Try the forest mushroom soup for starters and fried herring for mains! Excellent and classic!

The duck appetizer was delicious, and the reindeer filet was cooked to perfection. This was my first introduction to reindeer and it was tastier and leaner than venison. I'll definitely be having this again!

Great place to have a long lunch or dinner with friends. Classic portions are great. You also probably see Andy McCoy (Hanoi Rocks guitar player) there with his friends :)
