Classic Helsinki restaurant

I loved the decor of this restaurant, it's like somehting out of an Aki Kaurismaki film. Friendly service, and good, classic Finnish dishes being served. The coolest thing was running into Andy McCoy (Finnish legendary musician) though - apparently he's a regular here.

Sea Horse is a stalwart of the Helsinki scene. What they call a classic. The decor has not changed and there is a feeling of faded glory about the place. Unfortunately the food is indifferent at best and very expensive for what it is. It is traditionally Finnish in a bad way: my pike perch was overcooked, very greasy (swimming... More

Great finnish food (lihapullat ja muusi, kaalikäryleet ja paistetut silakat) from fresh ingredients, historic atmodphere and excellent service, we did enjoy😄

Went to this restaurant because it is recommended in a number of guidebooks. It's located in the vicinity of what is called the design district. The restaurant has two dining rooms, and the interior decoration is not appealing, brown faded color walls. It's in fact one of the arguments of this restaurant that it still has its original settings from... More

A true classic, everyone who lives here knows it. Unfortunately, it's not a cheap date anymore, they way it used to be. I have been coming here since 1980, and can't believe this is my first review. A lot of drinking has gone down here and some eating too. For first timers, you have to get the Silakka Plate (... More

Hearty and simple Finnish classics like meatballs, fried herring and stuffed cabbage rolls are offered here in generous portions and taste like good home cooking. We also enjoyed the desserts of pancakes with strawberry jam and squeaky cheese with cloudberry jam. The staff are friendly and efficient and the restaurant itself is welcoming with a dignified old fashioned style. Prices... More

Very nice staff and kind of Kaurismäki-style restaurant with genuine food. Prices are ok and the neighborhood is also interesting and nice.

Traditional Finnish food. Can get a little pricey depending on what you order, but it's definitely worth it. The Steak a la Sea Horse is wonderful, as is the Pike-perch a la Mannerheim. Staff is very attentive and friendly, great service!

This restaurant is a 10min walk from Helsinki's market square through the Observatory Hill. It was founded in 1934 and offers the best of classic Finnish specialities. The food is simple but super tasty, and comes in large portions. Service was quick and friendly, and prices are reasonable for such a nice restaurant. The building doesn't look like much from... We ate there twice during our visit. No nonsense beautifully cooked Finnish food in a very friendly environment and at very reasonable prices. We will be back when next we visit Helsinki. Some guide books give the impression that it's at a distance from the town centre. In fact it was 10 minutes on foot from our hotel beside the... More
