Balihai isn't with us anymore.. Worth trying instead in the neighbourhood: Deli cafe Maya on the Punavuorenkatu. Especially at lunchtime. :)

I went there on a Saturday night after walking around Helsinki for a couple of hours. I've read up on th eplace before and was surprised it was almost empty. Nice interior with chess-tiled (is that the proper word?) floor. The staff were nice and the burger, which really was a steak, was definitely worth the 15 or so Euros... More

We were surprised by the good ratings for this restaurant, so maybe we just ate there on an off night. The service was friendly, but the food took ages to come, and when it did, very little of it was inspiring. In particular, the steak sandwiches had tough and over-cooked meat. The best dish we tried was the pasta with... More

Was delighted to visit and dine out at Bali-Hai. Central location at the ethnic restaurant district in Punavuori, Helsinki. Modern and casual interiors. Menu offers a nice mix, including some traditional Finnish cuisine. Enjoyed my poronkäristys, which is a stew of thinly sliced reindeer meat, served with mashed potatoes and lingon berries. During summertime there is also a little terrace... More

Went there on a busy Saturday night without a reservation and were told that we would have to come back after 30-40 minutes - she would make sure a table was reserved for us. That worked out just fine. Food was good - 2 tapas as a starter and then a main dish each plus 50cl of drinkable red wine... More

Ate lunch here (they only open at 5pm weekdays until about 10pm) on a Saturday recently. Ate inside, although there are a few tables outside on the sidewalk but it's not exactly picturesque as it's just a regular road with no scenery. I should know. I live on this street! Anyway, the food was good. I ate goat's cheese and... More

This unpretentious restaurant is the perfect choice in Helsinki. Mostly traditional dishes are served with care in a casual, friendly environment.

We dined at Bali Hai around 9pm on a Friday evening, so needless to say, it was quite busy. After about 5 minutes wait for a table (and drinks from the bar during that time) we were seated and had a chance to browse the menu (in English and Finnish). The menu ranges from homemade raviolis to burgers and salads.... More

food is ok, nothing special. If the place is full, the noise is intolerable because of poorly thought acoustics. Sometimes the waitresses act as if you're not there and it may take 10 minutes just to get the menu
