Description: A Japanese Restaurant with a French accent, Umami is of one of the most...
A Japanese Restaurant with a French accent, Umami is of one of the most visually striking restaurants Copenhagen has ever seen. inspiration comes from Jesper Boelskifte, who dreamed of opening an Asian restaurant in Copenhagen, which stimulates all five senses simultaneously. But there's a sixth sense, which Umami explores. In terms of the cuisine, the intention was to be on par with Robert de Niro’s Nobu restaurant in New York. And the design would be in the same class as Morimoto in Philadelphia. Jesper’s dream became a reality with UMAMI, located on a prestigious street in the heart of Denmark’s capital.Visually, perhaps the most compelling element is a sculptural curtain with color-changing lights. A mood- generating concept which matched the vision of Jesper, who wanted to woo guests into a relaxed state of tranquility. The sculptural curtain and décor concept was developed by Orbit Design Company in London, whose client roster includes high profile brands such as Louis Vuitton, among others. Orbit was responsible for the interior design as well as the furniture, which was custom-made for UMAMI.The previous tenant was a bank, the remnants of which remain in the iconic metal door to a vault downstairs, which still has a security device. In the basement at UBAR, customers can choose from an extensive array of upscale cocktails. From lemon grass infused saké to a variety of martinis to Kirin beer. While seated at the elongated bar, a DJ serves equally delicious lounge and jazz music.Customers can go directly upstairs to any of the seats at the sushi bar with a front row centre view of the sushi chef in the open kitchen. Continuing upstairs to the first floor, there’s an extensive space able to accommodate 120 guests, immersed in a total, all encompassing experience. Enjoying the utmost in professionalism.

Great food in over-the-top interior design.

Wonderful Japanese-French cooking. I tried the Omakase tasting menu and matching wines, and got a nice and tasty variety of seafood and meat dishes, sushi, and a great green tea and yuzu dessert. I didn't care much for the interior of the place - a bit grotesque, wannabe-fashionable that I hate to... read more

This is probably the best place for sushi in a city plastered with sushi restaurants. We dined here on two special occasions and tasted both the surprise menu (which contained a variety of delicious French and Japanese dishes, only two of which were sushi) and sushi à la carte. Both were fabulous. This is one of the few places that... More

This is a fabulous restaurant, take the chefs choice menu, its just great! Not the cheapest eat in Copenhagen but one for a special occasion. Umami is the name but it's also the theme so if you need an Asian hit, this is the place to go. The wine menu is a little overpriced IMO but it works too. Top... More

Amazing food, great service and reasonable prices! Only downside was having to wait 45 minutes when we already had a table booked..

We had a reason to celebrate as a family and fortunately we did it at Umami. We enjoyed great food, great wine and great service. We chose a six course Omakase at DKK 650 per person and it is a treat with a delicate balance between the best of France and the best of Japan. The wine card was also... More

My husband went to Umami for a work dinner and decided to bring me back the following night because he enjoyed his meal so much. We tried the omakase and thought the food was delicious! Each dish was presented well and the waitstaff did a great job of explaining everything. We found the sushi to be fresh and the cocktails,... More

Husband had the tempura and I had sushi. As I read that this was one of the top restaurants in Copenhagen for Sushi. And indead it was. Everything so fresh and tastful and very good waiter who educated me in the world of sushi. Thanks!

I've been here a few times and each time the food is fantastic. The fish is incredibly fresh and the waiting staff is friendly. It does get a bit noisy so it might not be the best place to go for a quiet meal. Definitely not suitable for children.

The food is very well presented and tasty. The sushi is fresh, but a bit too pricey. You should have a reservation especially on weekends.
