Description: A Japanese Restaurant with a French accent, Umami is of one of the most visually striking restaurants Copenhagen has ever seen. inspiration comes from Jesper Boelskifte, who dreamed of opening an Asian restaurant in Copenhagen, which stimulates all five senses simultaneously. But there's a sixth sense, which Umami explores. In terms of the cuisine, the intention was to be on par with Robert de Niro’s Nobu restaurant in New York. And the design would be in the same class as Morimoto in Philadelphia. Jesper’s dream became a reality with UMAMI, located on a prestigious street in the heart of Denmark’s capital.Visually, perhaps the most compelling element is a sculptural curtain with color-changing lights. A mood- generating concept which matched the vision of Jesper, who wanted to woo guests into a relaxed state of tranquility. The sculptural curtain and décor concept was developed by Orbit Design Company in London, whose client roster includes high profile brands such as Louis Vuitton, among others. Orbit was responsible for the interior design as well as the furniture, which was custom-made for UMAMI.The previous tenant was a bank, the remnants of which remain in the iconic metal door to a vault downstairs, which still has a security device. In the basement at UBAR, customers can choose from an extensive array of upscale cocktails. From lemon grass infused saké to a variety of martinis to Kirin beer. While seated at the elongated bar, a DJ serves equally delicious lounge and jazz music.Customers can go directly upstairs to any of the seats at the sushi bar with a front row centre view of the sushi chef in the open kitchen. Continuing upstairs to the first floor, there’s an extensive space able to accommodate 120 guests, immersed in a total, all encompassing experience. Enjoying the utmost in professionalism.

It is one of the best experiances I've had in Copenhagen. Compared with the over all impression of the food, service and wine it's a very fair priced restaurant. You must try the tiger prawns - amazing!

We were visiting Copenhagen with our two year old. Checked in to the hotel. We are keen on going to places more "family friendly". Concierge highly recommended the place. I asked them to specifically ask if we are welcomed with our two year old, and she is really a quiet one. Off we went. Boy it was a mistake. As... More

Entering the restaurant was a strange thing. The cocktail bar is the first thing that meets you? And lots of buisness suits enjoyed a drink. Up the stairs and through a long narrow room before entering the seating area. The interior wasnt to my liking, very dark and steril, much like the interior in another restaurant (MASH). One waiter seemed much... More

Without a doubt some of the best drinks, sushi, sashimi, sake and wines I have ever had! We ordered the omakase and wine menu and what a treat! But my understanding of this concept my be a bit different than Umami's. I thought that the chef will prepare the food straight from his heart from whatever ingredients there is at... More

The interiour at Umami is great - It creates a really good atmosphere. The Food does what it should, but Copenhagen offers a lot of great sushi restaurant so for me this can only be 4 stars.

The place has a cool design, staff is helpful and nice, food is really good. We tried the menu with chef's signatures and it was very good, especially the dessert (which is not so usual in asiatic kitchen). Let's have a cocktail in the bar, 'cause they are amazing!

We chose a six course unspecified menu with accompaning wine menu. The wine menu was not good and the waiters (we had several) seemed to know very little about wine. The food however was great. Simple and complex at the same time. The sushi was top-class!

The first time you walk into Umami, you love it. Long bar, discreet lights, comfortable sofas. You grab a cocktail, you relax and you enjoy entertaining the thought about the meal to come. Then you are led up the stairs : to a brightly lit, noisy, uninviting space. The meal, (in our case Omakase menu) is indeed a treat -... More

This was some of the best sushi my husband and I have ever eaten. Service was amazing as well as the decor and ambiance. However, be prepared to pay a handsome price. Copenhagen is generally expensive anyways, but this was above and beyond. We had a big waffle after eating! If you are prepared to pay, the food was to... More
