Description: A Japanese Restaurant with a French accent, Umami is of one of the most...
A Japanese Restaurant with a French accent, Umami is of one of the most visually striking restaurants Copenhagen has ever seen. inspiration comes from Jesper Boelskifte, who dreamed of opening an Asian restaurant in Copenhagen, which stimulates all five senses simultaneously. But there's a sixth sense, which Umami explores. In terms of the cuisine, the intention was to be on par with Robert de Niro’s Nobu restaurant in New York. And the design would be in the same class as Morimoto in Philadelphia. Jesper’s dream became a reality with UMAMI, located on a prestigious street in the heart of Denmark’s capital.Visually, perhaps the most compelling element is a sculptural curtain with color-changing lights. A mood- generating concept which matched the vision of Jesper, who wanted to woo guests into a relaxed state of tranquility. The sculptural curtain and décor concept was developed by Orbit Design Company in London, whose client roster includes high profile brands such as Louis Vuitton, among others. Orbit was responsible for the interior design as well as the furniture, which was custom-made for UMAMI.The previous tenant was a bank, the remnants of which remain in the iconic metal door to a vault downstairs, which still has a security device. In the basement at UBAR, customers can choose from an extensive array of upscale cocktails. From lemon grass infused saké to a variety of martinis to Kirin beer. While seated at the elongated bar, a DJ serves equally delicious lounge and jazz music.Customers can go directly upstairs to any of the seats at the sushi bar with a front row centre view of the sushi chef in the open kitchen. Continuing upstairs to the first floor, there’s an extensive space able to accommodate 120 guests, immersed in a total, all encompassing experience. Enjoying the utmost in professionalism.

Delicious japanese fusion food in Copenhagen

I had my birthday dinner here and the food and wine were absolutely great and very delicious. The service were extraordinary and very attentive and helpful in all aspects of the evening. Its not a cheap place, but then again that is not the purpose on a night out on Umami, its about enjoying great... read more

I have been a guest at Umami since they opened. More or less every time i come back to Copenhagen i try to eat at Umami. I have never been disappointed. I would recommend some of the fantastic cocktails and then a set menu from the chef. It is truly a great experience. And to be able to keep the... More

Was impressed that my (teenage) daughter agreed to go - traditional sunday dinner meat and 2 veg is more her thing... and even more impressed that she went for the omakasi menu... Even though with a cocktail, sake (quality), and a couple of beers, the damage was £200 (bill comes in an envelope with "THE DAMAGE" printed across it!!!), I'm... More

Restaurant : Umami. The restaurant has won so many acolades and is often billed as the Nobu of denmark so we were all excited to taste Umami. This was also the sister company to Mash which we enjoyed thoroughly. Ambience : Like Nobu, dark funky lighting, hip music, strobe lights, comfy chairs, more like a comfy lounge. And with creative... Sometimes fusion restaurants try too hard and fail. Every twist here however was well-considered and really worked superbly. Recommend trying the Omakase menu, where you are in the hands of the chef. Service staff were very friendly and informative and the wine list was also notable for its focus on wines that worked with the style of food. Looking forward... More

Was kindly invited to Umami on a business trip. Umami scores high in the interior decor element, doubling up as a rather pretentious lounge with DJ on Friday nights. Dress code wise, think impossibly high heels for females and expensive streetwear for males. Selfies seemed 'de rigueur'. Food wise, the tasting menu was very average fare, even though the waiters... Superb fusion between japanese sushi and french cuisine. Food: delicate, exquisite. I don't think I have ever ate a sushi good like that. The fusion with french cuisine is really interesting, like Gunkan with foie gras, which might seem strange but is actually made which such expertise that you will find yourself loving it. The menu doesn't have a lot... More

Worst service I have ever received in Copenhagen. Waiter knew absolutely nothing about Japanese cuisine. And he certainly did not appreciate us asking questions about them. He was was on the other hand very eager to let us know that it would not be possible to order a second round of sushi and that we only had the table for... More
