Alana Fresh food straight from the market. Specializing in grilled meat and Cretan cuisineThe restaurant's name derives from the old times. Alana was a place that kids of all the neighbourhood used to join together and play. It was first established in 1986 at the heart of the old town of Rethymno in Salaminos street , the central street under the castle of Fortezza and used to be one of the first tavernas in the area. With 200 seats it was the most crowdy place of the old town. In 2002 under new management, the place transformed to a more relaxing restaurant with 100 seats based on good quality products, attendive service and reasonable prices. Alana made a new beginning, changing totally the style of the restaurant, serving unique dishes of traditional fare in a relaxing setting full of flowers creating the perfect backdrop for a dining experience highlighted by inspired cuisine and impeccable service. The restaurant has attracted both tourists and local people drawn to the superb food, charm and hospitality of its owners. The restaurant serves healthy Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, using products sourced locally, cooked with care and it has been established as one of the best restaurants in town, based on the customers’ reviews. The extensive a la carte menu includes favourites like lamb with artichokes, Cretan smoked pork “apaki” and stuffed vine leaves, chargrilled steaks and beef burgers, grilled vegetables with feta cheese and oregano, wild greens with tomato, garlic and potatoes. Unique home made deserts are also offered.

Delicious unusual greek dishes and nice atmosphere

In Alana we have tried so specially cooked greek dishes and drinks that I remember the shades of these delicious tastes even now. It's the most remarkable restaurant I went in Greece. Serving is very beautiful and it's very pleasant to sit under a large tree in cool shadow. If I go to Rethymnon one... read more

Nice decoration, and atmosphere. Good food although sometimes it could have stronger taste. I was in the Alana 3 times but always well served. Good wine.

The Alana generates a friendly welcome and has a 'variable' roof setting for when the weather is against us. Yes, sometimes it does rain in Crete! The Senior waiter takes his role seriously and consistently tries hard to look after visitors - though at times - better support from some of his team would be helpful. The Alana stays 'on... More

My wife and I ate in this restaurant on more than one occasion for lunch and dinner during our holiday in June this year. Each time the service and quality of food were excellent, the chateaubriand was to die for, likewise their seafood. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. If ever you are hungry in Rethymnon old town... More

The whole setting is excellent, looking like a traditional Cretan backyard with a modern bar. The food was excellent, a little adapted to international taste I might say being Greek and knowing the difference. The price was also reasonable with respect to the quality and service.

The restaurant itself is a treat to sit in and have a drink. The food is very good and the service impeccable. The prices are on the high side but for a quiet meal in a lovely setting this is the place. Ask Georges about his olive trees !

Had a lovely lunch where I had a very tasty Greek salat followed by a risotto with truffles that could have been a bit more intense in flavour but never the less was nice with the wonderful seductive smell of truffles. Came back in the evening where I had smoked, marinated pork as a starter that turned out to be... More

This restaurants back door was opposite our accommodation, we were in a perfect spot, the whole experience of eating here was just lovely, so good we ate here for the 2 nights we stayed.
