Alana Fresh food straight from the market. Specializing in grilled meat and Cretan cuisineThe restaurant's name derives from the old times. Alana was a place that kids of all the neighbourhood used to join together and play. It was first established in 1986 at the heart of the old town of Rethymno in Salaminos street , the central street under the castle of Fortezza and used to be one of the first tavernas in the area. With 200 seats it was the most crowdy place of the old town. In 2002 under new management, the place transformed to a more relaxing restaurant with 100 seats based on good quality products, attendive service and reasonable prices. Alana made a new beginning, changing totally the style of the restaurant, serving unique dishes of traditional fare in a relaxing setting full of flowers creating the perfect backdrop for a dining experience highlighted by inspired cuisine and impeccable service. The restaurant has attracted both tourists and local people drawn to the superb food, charm and hospitality of its owners. The restaurant serves healthy Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, using products sourced locally, cooked with care and it has been established as one of the best restaurants in town, based on the customers’ reviews. The extensive a la carte menu includes favourites like lamb with artichokes, Cretan smoked pork “apaki” and stuffed vine leaves, chargrilled steaks and beef burgers, grilled vegetables with feta cheese and oregano, wild greens with tomato, garlic and potatoes. Unique home made deserts are also offered.

Lovely meze

Excellent lunch of meze, salads, stifado. Daughter had the chicken burger and even that was very special! Welcoming and good value.

A MUST, the chateauxbriand is the best we've had by far, even better than home. Friendly staff who remembered us from our last visit two years ago.

This place serves high quality food at a very fair price. Everything we ate and drank was simply excellent. In particular I would recommend the Veal Carpaccio, and the Filo Shrimp in Grey Roe Dip - Delicious! The restaurant is located off the beaten track in a quiet street behind the Venetian Harbour but is well worth seeking out.

Thoroughly recommend this excellent restaurant. Easily beats Avli around the corner for service and ambience and much better value for money as well.

We visit Alana restaurant for lunch almost every time we are on Crete. This time we had friends with us and we ordered the usual set of meze with drinks. The service at Alana has not changed and is still pleasant, professional and quick without being too attentive. The food is fresh and tasty, drinks cold. We recommend the local... More

Yes, this place was recommended. However, our recommendation list had a negative list (don't go) for a few places. It was early for dinner, but a 12 years old, that was with us wanted pizza. So we stopped at "La Piazza" (great pizza, see my comments there), visited the castle and came back to Alana. We were looking at the... More

Came for dinner in late July - very warm evening in the garden and we were not covered by a fan so remained hot throughout the meal. Service professional, swift and capable - some staff were friendly, some not so much. Cuisine also good, less obviously local than elsewhere but good quality and cooked well. Wine list impressive. We came... More
