Portes must be the best restaurant in Chania. Located in a small alley next to the Venetian city walls, it has loads of atmosphere. Reservations are a must. The menu promises traditional dishes with a contemporary twist, and the food delivers on that promise. With a party of 10, we had a variety of dishes. Most memorable were the specials... More

This restaurant is worth finding as we loved the food and ambiance here. There is a daily specials menu as well as the normal menu and all the food is freshly prepared by the excellent staff. We ate here three nights including our last and were never disappointed with our choices of food. The staff are very friendly and helpful and will... More

Super friendly owner, we had a great time chatting we here and all the dishes we tried were excellent. Try the specials on the board for something different and enjoy The atmosphere was beautiful and busy. We weren't rushed and were able to enjoy each course. They accommodated my sisters gluten free needs and we would definitely go back. We... More

Lovely setting and superb food. Very busy in August but we were not rushed at all and the cooking was truly superb. Worth seeking out and booking in advance (around ten couples were turned away as we were dining)...

Positives: Food is great, very very nice Moussaka. Negatives: Restaurant is hard to find and so busy that the staff have trouble coping. Staff and owner not too friendly, maybe they were stressed.

first night we arrived in chania and it was time for dinner. Hotel Casa Delfino recommended this restaurant and called ahead for reservations. The owner is an english woman and her two greek sons and they were so hospitable. The food is amazing...my husband is still talking about his stuffed pork dish. The surrounding are very quiet and pleasant. Definitely... More

Having read excellent things about Portes in the Lonely Planet guide to Crete, and wanting to steer well clear of the tourist trap restaurants lining the harbour, we made this our first meal of the holiday. We knew we were taking a bit of a chance by not booking and sure enough, even on a Tuesday night, all seats were... More

We stumbled across Porte whilst wandering the beautiful backstreets of Chania's Venetian port, searching for Taverna Strata. We found the latter to be fully booked, fortuitously for us, as Porte provided us with... Melt in the mouth Bream Luscious lamb burgers...the owner even gave us the recipe Sumptuous slow cooked Lamb in yogurt.... I had to keep a close eye... More

Last time in Chania, we started our trip with a meal here, and this time we finished our trip to Chania with a final meal in Portes. It was just as great as the first time. The setting, on a quiet side street, makes for a relaxing evening away from the hustle and the bustle of the main harbour. They... More
