Great restaurant for lunch

We came across Portes on our lonely planet guide and the description had our tongues swirling before we even reached there. Located in the alleys of old town, away from the crowd at the harbour, Portes is a beautiful restaurant with a fantastic menu. It is suggested to order from their specials board - the meatballs with rice, grilled fish,... More

If you want 5 star Greek food and away from the hustle and bustle of the front you have to come here. Fantastic friendly service with amazing food and a wine list to match. Very reasonable.

For vegetarians, there are SO many options. The whole menu was creative and interesting....very difficult to decide what to order! While the service was slow, it was nice to be sitting on a quite street outside, watching people go by. The food was worth the wait!

I really enjoyed Portes, the service and dishes were excellent! They had many Greek dishes and nice specials. The value was also great, and portions were large. Most dishes were 7-8 Euro, and nothing over 11 Euro.

The vibe at Portes was great - situated in the heart of the old town in a cute cobblestone street. Options on the menu were vast however we felt what might have been a unique charm has been lost due to popularity. There are so many restaurants in the street so we felt it could be just another one for... More

Many restaurants with good Trip Advisor ratings hike their prices. Portes remains a great value. They have wonderful 8 and 9 euro entrees. You can't go wrong with anything on their special menu. We had the chicken meatballs (twice), bureki (twice), country risotto and chicken stuffed with trachana. All were delicious. Their salads are large and superb.

Situated in a narrow street just inside the old city-wall, Portes is a nice place to stay in. The food is "modern" greek, with unaspected combinations, some with fruits. Many vegitarian dishes. The Melitzanosalata was a surprise, and a nice one. Not the usual purée. The Saganaki was good (but better at Doloma). Went back twice in a week.

Probably the best meal we had in Crete. Lovely ambience, outdoor tables, excellent service and only steps from Chania's best gelato.
