Great place to have a late lunch

To Kafeneio place is certainly by no means a tourist trap - I stumbled upon the tavern as I was looking for a quiet place for a late lunch and I was certainly not disappointed. There are not too many tourists in this area because this is not the heart of Plaka. The seating area outside is shaded and... read more

This place has been around for a long time - and its popular not only with the tourist crowd, but the locals as well - and for a good reason. The food is really quite outstanding - and its in this alley - so while you can still people watch, it's quiet enough to remain romantic.

We visited Kafeneio a few weeks ago on our first visit to Athens. I had a list of some recommended restaurants near the sights we were visiting. This one was a little tricky to find, but we were so glad we found it. We ordered the meatballs with the sauce, the tzatziki meze, and shared a Greek salad. The were... More

Nice small place with good food and friendly staff. I had the Berks Mezes beef with spices, it tasted spiced indeed and the meat was well cooked. The menu is somewhat different then the surrounding restaurants, no souflaki and gyros here, but tasty meals with no enormous portions and long menu's.

Having booked this restaurant from its description in our Athens guide book, we were on first impressions underwhelmed with its outside seating area and general external appearance. However the menu was interesting and different from the normal tourist restaurants and no one was trying to badger you into eating there. Instead we were very warmly welcomed and enjoyed by far... Our family stopped here twice on our stay in Athens. Good, friendly service, nice home style cooking. They're honest on their menu about what is frozen and also list what dishes are family recipes. We went with what seemed their specialties (like the zucchini fritters, meatballs with THE sauce, etc.) and had good meals each time. They also have nice,... More

This was by far the most disappointing meal we had in Athens. The "carpaccio" was smoked and really didn't resemble what one would expect. The meatballs were clearly microwaved and falling apart. Service was slow and disinterested. Would definitely not recommend coming here.

My family and I went to this place for lunch, after a half tour of the Acropolis. I have learnt to appreciate Greek food and it's so delicious; you can taste the fresh ingredients. Highly recommended.

The only bad thing to report was that we were sitting at a small table in the middle of a tourist group. The rest was great. it is a great restaurant for mezedes. We tried with the help of the friendly waiter a lot (actually, too much). We can only recommend it. Reservation is a must !

We loved this place since the first time we walked in. it is decorated like a grandma's living room and this gives the place a very special charm. The food follows traditional Greek recipes and it is very tasty. We had five small dishes: cod carpaccio, potato handmade fritters, small mitzithra cheese pies, bekris mezes and pannacotta and chocolate pannacotta,... More

Staying in Plaka

Neighborhood Profile
Plaka
Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay and play. Its attractive features include small squares, some notable museums and the beautiful Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a number of souvenir shops, offering classier items than you will find in the Flea Market. The most rewarding section to explore is the upper reaches towards the Acropolis itself, where many old stone houses with tiled roofs have survived. Up here you can find leafier corners and the odd quaint taverna with unobstructed views of the ancient rock.
