This restaurant is owned by the same people of Gaviao Novo so you'd expect good food. The place is very modern and the staff are really friendly. The food was good but not as inspiring as I thought it would be, nothing wrong with it, but just something lacking somehow! would go there again though next time we are in... More

You get a great welcome at the door, as is to be expected in this competitive part of the old town, but that level of attention continues throughout your meal and even when you leave. We came back to eat here again, and even had the same starters as they had been so good first time round - the chestnut... More

Everything about this place is great. The location, the food, the wine , and the staff. Everything is cooked on a wood burning stove. We had clams to start, my husband had a red snapper and I had 1/2 a fresh lobster au gratin. Completely delicious ! The staff are friendly, interested and keen to ensure your evening is a... More

Fantastic location in the old town next door to our Hotel, Porto Santa Maria. We ate there on several occasions and each time the food was fantastic. I have to say I have never eaten better pepper steak anywhere ! The staff are delightful and friendly and made us very welcome. Can't wait for my next visit.

Tabernacle Da Esquina is in the most crowded restaurant district in the old town, but well worth seeking out. My criticism would be the vegetarian selection, which

With such a large number of restaurants in a small area it is difficult to decide which one to choose. They nearly all have the same menu ! Lots of them have a man ( or girl ) on the pavement to encourage you to stop and read their menu. This can get annoying but hey, we're on holiday and... More

We had a dinner there and service was good and fast, and food was really nice, we had chestnuts soup ( but I think they cheated and put some beans inside as well, but anyway was really tasty), prawns was great, nicely made, fresh, local garlic bread was fantastic, and the only thing we didn't like was pasta with vegetables,... Dis Santa Maria used to be an empty back street. It is now a centre of dining in Funchal with many restaurants. Taverna da Esquina is probably the best, with tasteful decor, good service and excellent food. Strongly recommended.

Looked for an inside restaurant on chillier evening this ones fish counter looked very good so went in, service from start was very good. I've been hunting clams since I arrived so a tank with live clams (and oysters, crab & lobsters) ticked all the boxes, absolutely delivered on quality and flavour, hubby had carpaccio of scabbard, delicious, sea bream... We visited this restaurant as a result of the Trip Advisor rating which was highest of the many in the old town and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent as was the service. No gimmicks, just an enjoyable evening at reasonable cost. In fact we went a second time and it was just as good. Some of these... More
