Our favourite Funchal restaurant

Our favourite restaurant at the beginning of the Rua Santa Maria, close to the Market. They only serve fish and vegetables. The best is their scabbard fish marinated in white wine and garlic, and the garlic coated chips, make you an unpopular neighbour on the bus back to your hotel. Wooden tables... read more

As others have said this is run by two siblings who have been in the business for 40 years, so know their stuff. This is a no frills place but good food served with a wealth of knowledge and a smile. We had great Scabbard fish with veg and fried potatoes with garlic and oregano. Great wine with the food... More

If you want a fancy meal with little taste and a high price don't go to this restaurant. Portuguese food is uncomplicated and fish is best cooked quickly and served simply. This restaurant serves good local food at a good local price.

This restaurant is a one off. Seating 24 max at small wooden tables and stools, it is really an extension of the kitchen, where the owner cooks each table's orders as they come in. so it is super super fresh and boiling hot. The scabbard fish with garlic is perhaps the best we have sampled in Funchal. Don't expect a... More

We went to Jaquet on the basis of Tripadvisor reviews and had a lovey time. We turned up at 20.30 on Friday night and were seated immediately. As others have pointed out, it's an extremely simple, even basic, setup. Don't expect flashy decor. There was a mix of locals and tourists there but it felt very authentic. The two owners... More

It was a lovely surprise to find this hidden gem in the beginning of Rua Santa Maria. The place is small, you feel like if you were in your grandma living room. The owners are really funny and pleasant! Agh and the absolutely delicious: espada em vinha d'alhos, fried chicharro (a small fish) and homemade French fries. They use lots... More

in this place you can't go wrong. Simplest setup you can have: small place, no reservations, brother serves, sister cooks. Great sea food, fresh and well cooked. The vinegar and garlic scabbard fish with garlic fries is amazing, but will ruin your chances of socializing. Try the local lapas and caramujos as a starter, with a local beer. Then pop... More

We had a dinner at Jaquel, where the owner created the atmosphere and also the show in the open kitchen. However, the meal was disappointment, especially compared to the reviews. The limpets were worse than another Santa Maria restaurant and the Emparda meal was big and fatty. The white wine was also below average. We did not have any dessert,... More

tiny restaurant "with a character", owner makes a bit of a show and you are basically in a one-room with tables and open kitchen, but the food was good. Not for everybody I suppose, but we liked it.

Small family restaurant which seems to be enjoying its good reputation in guides and internet, small room where cook and his sister prepAre fishes of the day, the kitchen is close to the tables and expect to be welcomed with a greasy and oily smell. The owner is rather grumpy, seems to be part of the show, and we waited... More
