Authentic feel in old town

Situated in a narrow street where many houses have traditional painted doors, it felt local (some of whom were dining there too) Like many Portuguese restuarants, the menus are strictly factual in their descriptions (eg chicken with chestnut sauce) and consequently undersell the quality of the... read more

Tradicional food.. A museum like place. In the old zone of the city, it's a nice to experience for anybody who's looking for good food and good times

The place has nice atmosphere with very friendly staff dressed in traditional costumes. The beer served was nice and chilled. The wine selection was very good. The food served was excellent. We would recommend Piri Piri Chicken. One of the best restaurant we visited in Madeira. We had a nice window table (inside) as it was bit cool in the... More

Service was ok and the girls were attentive enough but the food was both disappointing and overpriced. We arrived at the restaurant and were seated in a cubby hole that had damp marks and ripped upholstery. We asked to be moved and were but unfortunately the evening didn't improve. Won't be back!

I had asked a local guy that we met where he would go, in Funchal, to eat Espetada. He said Venda da Donna Maria, so we tried it and enjoyed it so much we went back the next day too. There was a nice atmosphere to this restaurant, the staff were attentive and helpful and the food was good. I... More

We were attached by the very warm and welcoming look of the restaurant and the menu which seemed a little bit different. We had chicken in chestnut sauce which was delicious, if rather too generous for us. For dessert we had the home made chocolate mousse which was as good as anything I have had in France (and twice the... More

We ate once at this restaurant having been attracted to it by the fact that it was often busy without being hassled by the waiters to go in. It had a rustic feel about it and the staff were pleasant. If was at the quieter end of rua Santa Maria and so wasn't the best spot for people watching. We... More

We came across this small restaurant on our first evening and was attracted to it because it looked authentic and welcoming and we weren't touted (unlike most of the other restaurants in the local area who were almost aggressive in their pursuit to get you through their doors). The food was very simple, but ample and delicious and very reasonably... More

We went in this restaurant last September. We were walking through the narrow alleys of the old Funchal and we saw this nice restaurant with some table outside. The atmosphere was very romantic. We decided to try this restaurant. The food was very good, we tasted fish dishes. In particular I remember "serenata de piexe" it was excellent with 3/4... More
