It is always nice to find a small restaurant with great ambience both inside and out. We stumbled across Donna Maria in Rue de Santa Maria where there are many bars and restaurants spilling out into the the small street. The staff are helpful and enjoyed my Portuguese helping me though and we eat outside with French and Germans. The... More

Like many restaurants on this little street we were happy with this one. Unfortunately we were not hungry enough and the dishes were huge!

This was our second restaurant meal in Madeira and stopped here on spec as it boasted local cuisine. My wife and son and a beef dish for two in a sauce which was a local dish. There was a lot of beef and they loved the dish. I had the Espada - black scabbard - with banana and passion fruit... More

Another random pick in the old town but to be honest I wasn't all that impressed. I'm not saying the food was bad but compared to what we have had up to this point there is a lot better to be had.

Funchal is full of the same bland restaurants which all carry the same tourist menus. You really have to search for special places and fortunately this is one. Great service, wonderful atmosphere but the main part: great food. Finally a place that had some interesting vegetable options as well, like for instance a great favabeans salad.

Nice restaurant in the old part of Town. The service is friendly, efficient and dedicated. The food is good, in particular the fish menu. The price is reasonable: 30 euros for starter (four tastes), main course (fish), side dish of vegetables, water, house wine, coffee, a glass of Madeira and poncha.

We went here for lunch and chose a bowel of tomato soup which was really good. Seved with local garlic buttered bread which again to go was very nice. This is a very good place for lunch.

Vendada Donna Maria is situated in the old part of Funchal. The restaurant serve a mix of traditional Madeira food and Portuguese food. The staff is very friendly and will advice you in any way. We had some of the traditional dishes and is was wonderful. And, as a surprise, they served a piece of cake for my wife, as... More

Popped in here on a whim without checking any reviews. After our starters (banana and ham, mango and prawns) we were both full. For mains we had the Madeiran beef and the chicken in beer. Both were absolutely delicious but neither of us could finish. The food is fantastic, the portions are large and the prices are reasonable. The staff... More
