We'll be back

We went to Taj Mahal two times during our stay on Madeira. Kind and service-minded people with humour met us both times. Good food. Try the soup as a starter! It was also near to our hotel, Pestana Carlton. Very nice and clean place!

The Taj Mahal offers a varied menu of Indian food, which made a change from other local restaurants. When we went in April, at about 8 pm it was very quiet - only a couple of tables were occupied. Our waiter was friendly and service was good. However we felt that although the food was quite nice, it was nothing... More

The Taj Mahal was recommended in our guid book and being across the road from the hotel, seemed like a good bet. We arrived just after 18:00 and the restaurant was empty, never a great sign! However, we persevered and were glad we did; quick service (it was quiet of course), nice food and friendly staff. The curries were pretty... More

We usually visit here whilst on holiday as a welcome change from steak etc. This year, we felt the food was excellent. The chicken and spinach curry simply melted in your mouth. If you want freshly cooked food, then you must be prepared to wait. Everyone we spoke to at the Royal Savoy who had eaten there also said that... More

Ate at the Taj Mahal twice the first time the food was really good and so was the service. Thought we would try it again, the second time we visited it was a bit busier and the service was shocking. The starter was cold and it took forever for the main course to arrive. This could be a good restaurant... More

Food was delicious, papadums were served as they should: raita, the green spicy sauce and some chutney), the best daal soup we have ever had (and trust me, we have eaten at quite a few indian places). Main course was also delicious, nicely cooked, not too oily for the curry. Ambiance was good, restaurant is run by a real Indian... More

Nothing too much to say about this Indian restaurant other than the description above. Local to the Royal Savoy Hotel a fairly average restaurant serving all the usual Indian fare to a reasonable standard with ok service. Really just a no frills restaurant, not outstanding but not bad either.

As curries go this restaurant offers a good alternative to the touristy outlets around Funchal. Poppadoms slightly disappointing but on the whole a pleasant dining experience. Try for a balcony table though as when temps are high a nice breeze is welcome when having spicy food

Decided to revisit after two years . Starters were delivered promptly THEN we had to wait 50 mins for the main course whilst other people were being served who came in half hour after us . We had to remind our waiter re our meal which they had clearly forgotten ... I told them to cancel my meal because of... More
