Je ne sais quoi, !!!!!

Just walked pass this tourist restaurant on one balmy night. I was drew in by melancholy charming live fado music. Went in for a drink or two, then decided to have a try on their food with clear mind. Typical garlic prawn in olive oil was rather bland ,small and missing all the kicks and ticks... read more

This restaurant, in an attractive courtyard with ancient well, is situated adjacent to the wonderful fish, vegetable and flower market and with such a choice of fresh ingredients on its doorstep you would expect an excellent tasty meal. We visited on a Saturday evening and the restaurant was less than half full. The complimentary olives were tough and chewy. No... More

Located next to the famous Farmers Market (at the western end of the Old Town) and known for its fado singers (3 times per week at this time of year, but check first), O Almirante is particularly for tourists off the cruise ships. It is more expensive than most of its neighbours and not better. With customers outside, inside and... More

Wish I'd had internet to check Tripadvisor.. Would have saved us an unpleasant experience. Starting at the starters... Suckling pig in pastry - soggy, greasy pastry & tasteless pork, like a very poor quality sausage roll. Cod starter - sort of mini fish cakes, not too bad but more potato than cod. Main meals...chicken on skewer - extremely dry &... More

We had not seen the reviews of this restaurant before we ate here.We had been out for a walk around the old town and had got fed up with being hassled by the callers for all the restaurants we passed. When oh when is it going to dawn on the Maderian`s that they frighten away as many as they catch. We personally... after reading mixed review we decided to try this restaurant. The team were very friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious and one of the best steak on the stone I had all holiday. There was a lovely lady singing and the whole atmosphere was spot on. We will return

We settled for tuna sallad and as Almirante is so close to the fish and vegetable market we expected the best fresh ingredients available. However; boring vegetables and canned tuna.

I loved this place! The staff were delightful each time I went. Treated to the delicious suckling pig & the chamfana during my stay - absolutely stunning. Will definitely be back.

Lovely restaurant across the street from the Electricity Museum. Friendly well dressed waiters and a good menu that caters for snack diners as well as those seeking more expensive fare. Outside the old public water fountain is an attractive focal point. The upstairs dining area is open and airy and offers some nice town views. Only had lunch but will... More

Very well situated restaurant near the market ...we ate outside which is in itself fantastic on an evening mid December....BUT....the waiter is very pushy, but in the end we found out that he's a nice guy ...they serve very bad food maybe mainly for the tourists who come off the cruise ships..I don't know...but the food was dreadful...we all had...
