Two very nice dishes , nice atmosphere

Restaurant reviews are so personal and subjective , we were wandering about funchal in the early evening , saw people dining in the open air , and thoughts, that's what we want. Young lady playing music on a zither , sounds bizarre , but was very good . We ordered lumps of steak looked on a skewer... read more

We were attracted by the al fresco dining and music. My husband really wanted Swordfish, so we checked that this was on the menu before going in. When our starter arrived we asked if we could have some bread - but this never came! The swordfish was in fact Scabbard - a fish that we had eaten several times, and... More

This the restaurant at the town end of Rua de Santa Maria. One of the few places that has Fado singing on a regular basis. The food was good and there were a few different things on the menu. I, personally, love Fado. I can't understand a word of it but one of the waiters translated one the songs the... More

I've eaten there twice. All meals were superb and the portions were gigantic. Meals prepared in traditional way are very tasty. Service is just great - waiters are very funny and friendly. They speak english very well and always trying to fit to your needs. The place has great atmosphere - it was funded in 1942 and currently even the... More

We never ate here, but after exploring the market, we stopped the a cold Coral beer to relax for half an hour. A welcome break, and a nice relaxing atmosphere.

Looks nice, food was not! Asked for wine, was brought a bottle no one seemed to know price of until we refused that it was opened until we knew price. Don't waste your money!

Our experience here was ok, the chicken I ordered was decent but the marinated pork in wine and garlic was dry, tough and still tasted strongly of alcohol. The portions were HUGE and for a couple with normal appetites it was far too much food, it could have fed four people. The singer was a bit much whilst we were... More

I had a beef sandwich made with traditional Madeiras bread it was very nice. My wife had a chicken sandwich made with white bread her bread was dry and a bit stale. The owner made us a fresh poncha which was very nice. If my wife's sandwich had been better then this would have been a much better review and... More

Attracted by the ambience and music and the fact that swordfish was on the menu we chose to eat here. Having ordered swordfish we were given Espada. As the soup was served we asked for some bread but this never arrived. In fact the soup portions were extremely generous so maybe we didn't need it. However, we would not go... More

Three stars might be a bit generous...this is a 'grab the punter' type of restaurant on the edge of the old town. The building looks OK, dining outside in the courtyard looks attractive and there is (slightly formulaic) entertainment some evenings. Menus are multi-lingual, as are the waiters, and service is reasonable if a bit frenetic. The menu selection is... More
