Wonderful fish dishes

I don't usually go for fish but I'm so glad I did. I had 4 different fish with their super tasty banana, and it could not have been better. All 4 of us were delighted with our meals, its reasonably priced!

We 'stumbled' across this place as it was up a side road near our hotel and the initial impression was not exactly upmarket. However, the menu looked good and we decided to give it a go. Was shown to our table and the staff were very attentive and helpful. We noticed that one of the diners at the next table... More

Have eaten here a lot on 3 holidays to Maderia over last 2 years and quality of food has been been consistently excellent. From the superb steak on the stone to the ever popular scabbard fish all is beautifully cooked and well presented. The fish platter for 2 is delicious. Good value for money and very friendly waiting staff, very... More

Strolled past this restaurant and almost missed it. From the outside it looks pretty average but venture in and you are in a totally different place altogether. The restaurant is spotless and the staff are really friendly and helpful. They helped us choose our food with all the fresh produce and food on display. They even took my friend into... More

Lovely clean, modern restaurant. Staff are very helpful in helping you choose your food. Had a fish selection which was delicious. Would certainly return and highly recommend.

We visited twice on our stay. The food was equally good each time. The octopus vinaigrette was great. Enough for 2 as a starter with lots of fresh parsley and deliciously sweet onions. The paella was worth waiting for. The tomato soup (with egg) had a sprig of thyme that added a new flavour. The mixed fish withe seafood was... More

We spend 2 weeks in Madeira every year and Lareira Portuguesa is the restaurant where we return to time and time again. Fish is the speciality and the portions will do you proud. Always busy in the evening it is also a nice place for a quiet lunch. Good service, good wines and value for money. We shall continue to... More

This is definitely the place to eat in Funchal. Great food in generous portion sizes, knowledgeable and friendly staff, a good selection of Portuguese wines…what else could you want. I was told that by a number of people that this is the place where the "locals" like to eat and I can definitely see why. Truly excellent.

We ate here twice during our family trip to Madeira. The food was always cooked well, the fish was fresh and the bill reasonable. The additional touches, such as free tasters and bread, were a nice addition and we felt looked after on both visits. One evening, my wife had the stone-cooked steak, which is a DIY event that requires... More

We looked on TA and saw the good reviews. V disappointed. Starter Prawn Crepes. Prawns not cleaned v rich not a good start, sent it back. We were both sold down the road of Steak on the Stone. Cooked by ourselves!!! Far too much meat lacking in flavour, think the joint you would buy for Sunday Lunch, one each!!! Never... More
