Pretty good

This was our first pick for dinner in Funchal, but it was a Sunday and we were quite disappointed to find it closed. Went on the last day of our stay and, after some days of solid meat dinners, we were really interested in having some fish: we found a new favourite fish dish: the peixe espada... read more

Having had pretty dire food and paid top dollar for it, A Bica restored my faith in Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant is small, but they serve proper food the way its meant to be. The menu (lunch) is far more varied than bulk standard boring tourist fare; THIS IS what the locals eat, and as a bonus, we only paid... More

On entering we were met by the staff with a warm a friendly welcome. Not the most glamorous place, but well worth a visit. Food and service were excellent. Must mention the home made ice cream, never had such a delight, cannot say why as I would not want to spoil the surprise. Definitely worth a try.

Found this through TA and fortunately the nearest side of Funchal to our apartment. Warm welcome, good food and nice atmosphere. The fish/seafood was delicious. Would definately recommend.

Really friendly ,lovely fish, copious portions, and all in all a good rapport quality price .The staff are multi lingual, and informal surroundings, it's in a basement with a small entrance in the street above the market.

The restaurant A Bica is located just next to the Funchal market, but in the basement! The restaurant was full and the service was very good. The staff speak several languages. The Food was simple but very tasty, and the price is reasonable. A typical portuguese restaurant.

We found A Bica by chance during our first visit to Madeira. Following some medical staff and police we noticed them going into the restaurant and we followed. What a find! Freshly cooked fish, lots of veg and salad - all for a very reasonable price. So when we returned to Madeira this year we didn't bother to go anywhere... More

The sort of place you could easily walk by without noticing ! Close to the fishmarket and down stairs into a basement area. Slightly worried about first impressions but totally unfounded. Wonderful variety of food all freshly prepared. Choose fish of the day and the variety will be presented to you for your selection. I had Epetada De Vac (fillet... More

If your travels should take you to Madeira, and you should find yourself in Funchal in need of a meal, you could do no better than to go to A Bica. This homely restaurant, opposite the Mercado dos Lavradores, is the favoured place for market traders to eat - need one say more? I tried the Lingua do vaca, and... More

Madeira is a Touristic place ; this Restaurant is not. Each time I visit Funchal I have to resist not to have lunch and dinner at this Restaurant, because I really like to "explore new experiences". I never found a similar Restaurant in Funchal, since the food is simply amazing (the best "Pão do Caco", a special bread with garlic... More
