We had a fantastic meal here the other night on the strength of other reviews. I agree with the other review that there is no "hard sell" from staff trying to entice us in as the food does the talking! Attentive service and very well cooked food. Beef skewer was good and steak excellent. Our son had crepes suzette cooked... More

Food & staff first class. Will try and accommodate individual preferences. Try the octopus (with chips!). Good value for money and always best to book.

We chose to dine one evening at O Portao during our week long holiday on the strength of other reviews, but were somewhat disappointed by the food. The atmosphere and service were extremely good, which created a very positive impression. Both of us ordered espetada, but it was not as authentic or tasty as we had sampled elsewhere - the... More

This is different, a restaurant in the old town with no one outside trying to press gang you in to their establishment. Why? Soon becomes obvious. What a cracking little restaurant and what great staff. The restaurant does also cater for the non-Madeiran palate, but I would strongly recommend you go for the local dishes, like the caldereida, portuguese squid………and... More

Just had Dinner at «O Portão» Good, honest and tasty Madeira's regional food! Very kind Staff and owner! Good Fresh Fish, Very nice Meat. Very decent prices! It was interesting to see many couples that keep returning every day during they're all stay at Funchal!

We have eaten here three nights in a row and hope to go again tonight --- Sunday. The food is fantastic and only bettered by the staff. The cooks are amazing. We have tried other restaurants in the Old Town and this is the best. The menu is very authentic and you will not be disappointed. Many thanks to all... More

We have read all the good things about this restaurant and have been very keen to eat at it. Unfortunately it is so busy that it willingly turns away customers who have not booked. Staff may be friendly once you have ordered but the arrogant way in which we have once been turned away and a second time asked to... More

We had read a few reviews about O Portao which all said good things, and when we visited we realised they were all right. O Portao is a great, great place to eat - the menu has some great things on it, the staff are absolutely brilliant. The first time we went we were impressed, and on that basis we... More

It's not easy to find this restaurant but as it was recommended by our travel guide, we persisted. It is next to a small chapel. There was a lively atmosphere in which excellent food was served. Food and wine were sensibly priced and we were spoiled for choice. Pineapple flambe was a really great desert.

Very friendly staff, made us feel welcome even though we were the last customers to leave. Not quite warm enough for us to eat outside. Inside nicely furnished and spacious. Party of four had fish and meat main dishes and a sweet. Good standard of food and house red wine. A restaurant we would definitely revisit if we return to... More
