We choose this restaurant as we were not hassled by staff as we walked passed, so glad we did. Fish skewers and grilled tuna were fabulous, and the garlic bread scrummy Will be back.

Delicious traditional Madeiran food served by very attentive and friendly waiters. They made our evening very special from offering a free drink to start and end our meal. The meat on a skewer was delicious. I would highly recommend this charming restaurant.

Just around the corner from our hotel in Old Town, was great to be able to look at the menu before deciding and also not to be hassled by the staff to eat there. Food was lovely and relaxed, will definitely recommend.

After a week in the Old town most of the Restaurants seem to be the same. We had heard good things from the other Holiday makers at the hotel and though we would give it a try. I went for Sardines (4 fat juicy ones) with sliced boiled potatoes with herbs and a side salad. My wife had a trio... More

The food here looked and tasted very good. Even our teenagers appreciated the good food. The staff helped to make the evening more enjoyable. They spoke many languages fluently and were able to explain clearly what the menu offered. The prices were very reasonable. I look forward to a return visit.

Having seen this restaurant on Tripadvisor we decided to go there on our last night in Funchal. It was so nice to look at a menu without being pestered by staff to sit down. We opted for a cocktail to start (Poncha) and then had the tomato and onion soup with homemade bread which was delicious. I had the beef... More

We visited O Portao during our recent stay in Funchal as it was near our hotel and was rated well on TA; we enjoyed our experience so much that we went back on a second occasion despite only staying in the town for a week. It was a good start to be able to read the menu outside without being... More
