Good, but not exceptional

The restaurant is in a cosy street. The staff is nice. We ate the traditional kebab which had a great taste. However, all the rest was just regular. The prices are fair, so if you which a not so expensive meal in the traditional part of Funchal, this may be the place to visit.

Just come back from our yearly visit to Madeira and, of course, we visited our favourite restaurant O Portao quite a few times. The guys who run this restaurant deserve the 5 star rating we always give them. They are really friendly, do not try to push you into ordering something you may not want but will help to explain... Fabulous restaurant, they get it all right. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, excellent hospitality and fabulous food and wine. We visited 3 times and were never disappointed. The tuna Portao style and fish scewers particularly favourites. Excellent value for a top quality meal. Go and check it out at the quieter end of the old town.

A charming restaurant in the old town. Friendly & courteous staff. We ordered 'fish of the day' - there were three to choose from and advice on these and on Portuguese wine (about which I know nothing) was given in a helpful & unpretentious manner. Altogether an excellent evening with delicious food in convivial surroundings. Not expensive either.

We had dinner at O Portao this evening. It is a lovely and very authentic portuguese restaurant in Funchal's old town. The service was good, the waiters were very attentive without being over the top. The food was lovely, we both had Parrot Fish which was delicious. I like the fact that the veg was a bit different and we... More

I am glad we visited here. The waiter was very attentive and explained what I could and could not have on his menu for a gluten free meal. The food was very tasty, reasonable cost with excellent service. Highly recommended.

Three years since we were last in Madeira, we had to revisit O Portao and I must again add to the general chorus of approval. It's had a refit a couple of years ago but retains its traditional feel and ambiance. The food and service as ever are top class without being pretentious. Many restaurants in this Old Town area... Second visit here and an apt one for us to remember our great holiday in Madeira. We were warmly welcomed by the staff and enjoyed their great tasting and well cooked food once again. The restaurants are generally of a good standard in the Old Town but this one was that bit better that made the difference for us. Great... More

This ticked all our boxes! No pushy touting for business, just someone to show us where the menu was and left us to browse it. We sat inside as it was a cooler evening. The garlic bread was the tastiest so far. We both went for the skewered beef which was fantastic. Then shared two desserts, a huge portion of... More
