We wandered around old Funchal, weather was chilly, & we wanted a cosy comfortable charming local restaurant. This is it! Service first class with a staff who truly love their jobs..smiles, great wines, excellent seafood. Watched bananas flambé made right at the table. Loved this restaurant!

The "espetada" was the only good thing, but the rest was very poor. The meat was tough and dry and the service... not up to standard. Ok, one waiter... More

We've been coming here for over 10 years. Food & service fantastic. Miss this restaurant at your peril! Recently refurbished but just as good. Best to book

Good atmosphere and great scabbard fish flambé! Made rain wine was excellent and complimentary Madeira and brandy really rounded off the night!

O Portao is a great little restuarant in the old part of Funchal. Very attentive service and very good food. We had the espada (scabbard fish) which is a deep water fish with very white, meaty flesh. I had espada with a Madeira wine sauce and my wife had her espada with a mild curry sauce - both very nice... More

This lovely little restaurant is at the far end of Old Town. It specialises in flambes. All the food and wine was excellent, as was the service with attentive and knowledgeable waiters. We loved it!

This restaurant ticked all the boxes. Good interesting food, well presented and of course, tasted good. The staff are very accommodating and will help with your choice. It is very clean, we saw the kitchen staff in operation, --all well dressed and presented. A complimentary apperitif was offered before the meal and a farewell drink was given before leaving. It... Great food. Flambes a speciality. Friendly and courteous staff. Terrific atmosphere. Book because it's pretty small. But if you're in this part of Funchal - don't miss this place.
