Lived upto its reputation.

We had heard good things about this place and we were not disappointed. On the edge of the Old town therefore not so much hassle or hustle. Menu was good, staff very pleasant and there seemed to be a number of diners who were regulards

We have our evening meal here several times on each holiday and have always had exceptional food and service. We also tried the lunch time special this holiday and I had three big fat sardines with salad and a drink for less than a price of a sandwich in the centre of Funchal . We were the only English people... More

Visited this restaurant in April with my family. Really tasty good value food. The fish stew was absolutely delicious. They warn you it takes 20 mins to prepare - but that's because it's cooked absolutely fresh. And it shows. Lovely atmosphere. Excellent service. Very friendly staff - without being overbearing. We had one of our best nights here.

Great food, and excellent service from all the staff. Very friendly, happy to explain the menu. We visited twice and we eat outside. We would definitely go again. 3 minutes walk from the Porto Santa Maria hotel.

We had been recommended the Portao by friends and we were not disappointed. A friendly greeting welcomed us in and the service the whole evening could not be faulted. We started with some garlic bread which was very strong but lovely with it. I then had the espada fish with passion fruit and another fruit which escapes my memory and... More

We stopped for a late lunch at the Portal, we ordered a couple of beers while deciding what to eat. I went for the easily special of sea bream, salad, chips and a glass of local red wine and my husband opted for the squid Portuguese style with fresh veg and saute potatoes. The food was well presented, fresh, perfectly... More

After getting lost a bit, we found this restaurant at the quieter end of a pedestrian road full of others - the road name changes, which was the reason we missed it first time. I deliberately chose a local dish - scabbard fish Madeira style. We hadn't tried this fish on a previous trip to the island - a long... More

This is most obviously a restaurant where their customers keep returning - as my wife an I did on our recent holiday. Our evening meal was lovingly cooked, mostly right before our eyes being flambéd, and beautifully presented. But those needing to avoid butter should be warned as they use an ENORMOUS amount in their cooking. Lovely! At my request... More

Great restaurant. Fantastic food. We were warned that we would have to wait 25 minutes as all the food is freshly cooked. Whilst we waited we had some typical Madeiran garlic bread (you all or both need to have it as it is very strong!) and enjoyed our Madeiran wine. My husband had a mixed fish kebab which had a...
