Wonderful food, impeccable service

This is most obviously a restaurant where their customers keep returning - as my wife an I did on our recent holiday. Our evening meal was lovingly cooked, mostly right before our eyes being flambéd, and beautifully presented. But those needing to avoid butter should be warned as they use an... read more

This is most obviously a restaurant where their customers keep returning - as my wife an I did on our recent holiday. Our evening meal was lovingly cooked, mostly right before our eyes being flambéd, and beautifully presented. But those needing to avoid butter should be warned as they use an ENORMOUS amount in their cooking. Lovely! At my request... More

We have been visiting this restaurant for 14 years and have never been disappointed. Always good food and friendly service.

Great restaurant. Fantastic food. We were warned that we would have to wait 25 minutes as all the food is freshly cooked. Whilst we waited we had some typical Madeiran garlic bread (you all or both need to have it as it is very strong!) and enjoyed our Madeiran wine. My husband had a mixed fish kebab which had a... After reading the reviews on tripadvisor, we decided to try this restaurant (and are so glad we did). It served traditional Portuguese food at reasonable prices. The service was good and the atmosphere was very pleasant. Unfortunately we only had the chance to visit once - I would definitely have liked to return.

Typical Portuguese fare, well done. The staff is very friendly (ok, we were there when Portugal played).

Glancing through the reviews and even looking around the restaurant, it is clear that Portao has built up a large "regular" clientelle for whom the place can do no wrong. So why have they slid down the Trip Advisor rankings this last year one asks because we enjoyed another couple of fantastic meals along with really good Portugese wines (which... More

Quite compact and located in the old town, the place had character. The staff fall over themselves to help and serve you. The menu was manageable and the food well prepared, served quickly and tasted very good (Must admit I've now forgotten what I had beyond the moule starter I shared with my wife! The house wine I recall was... More

While on holiday in Madeira we dined here because of the fantastic reviews it has & we are now going to add another one to the list. It is situated in the old town in a lovley setting. The food was superb, my wife for main course had Espatada, the local beef on a scewer & i had the rabbit... More

The restaurant is in a cosy street. The staff is nice. We ate the traditional kebab which had a great taste. However, all the rest was just regular. The prices are fair, so if you which a not so expensive meal in the traditional part of Funchal, this may be the place to visit.

Just come back from our yearly visit to Madeira and, of course, we visited our favourite restaurant O Portao quite a few times. The guys who run this restaurant deserve the 5 star rating we always give them. They are really friendly, do not try to push you into ordering something you may not want but will help to explain...
