This Old Town restaurant is brought to life by the staff - welcoming without being pushy, and always happy to advise and discuss. mostly traditional Madeiran dishes. Brilliant avocado starters, had an Espada one night, then a couple of days later the fish of the day - 'stone bream' - both well cooked. Great value for money, wine keenly priced... More

I ordered espetada, grilled meat on a stick. My girlfriend ordered fish Maderia style. We both loved it. And i recomend the fried polenta cubes:) we also had 1 small beer each and one fresh pressed orange juice. Cheapest place we have eaten. 29€ total!! We struggled a littlebit to find it. But this is amazable! Love from Norway

The O Portau Restaurant situated just behind the Corpo Santo Chapel, the fisherman's chapel, in Funchal Old Town is a real find. The staff were very friendly, helpful and obliging offering suggestions both with the food and the wine. The menu had a wonderful selection of local produce and recipes. For starters I had the Mussels and unlike another reviewer... More

It was due to the TA reviews and ranking that we ate at O Portao and we were a little disappointed. The service was friendly and the food quite ok but I thought it looked a bit "painting by numbers" on the plate and it was not a knockout meal. Perhaps I am being picky but we found other places... We ate here 3 times whilst holidaying in Funchal. We found the food to be top quality, we loved the garlic sweet potato bread, the sardines, espetada of beef and the hunters rabbit. The staff were attentive and helpful and the prices were fair for the quality of food provided. As said in other reviews, this is one restaurant in... More

I went for the fish skewer, accompanied by a variety of vegetables. Everything was delicious. My girlfriend had a skewer of beef they brought to the table and hung on a hook. This was equally as good.

We came twice to Portão, twice we got very happy. We ate once inside and another outside. The food is excellent, a good offer of fish, but the best was the service. The waiters are extremely nice and help you in your choice, very patient with our daughter. Totally recommended.
