Very little has changed of late it seems ! The roadworks are ongoing, the footpaths are incomplete and the food at Olives remains one of the highlights of a visit to Funchal. The halibut on pea risotto stole my heart and stomach. Even the black and tan linen table clothes make for a nice change. Put it on your list... More

It's such a shame that people seem to be put off by the roadworks - once you're inside Olives it's all about the food. This is a friendly, relaxed place run by two brothers (one front of house, the other in the kitchen). Think of what a good family business works like, and you'll get the idea. My wife had... More

Found this gem too late, on the last day of our stay in Funchal. It is a bit hidden, and the interior of restaurant is not impressive. The waiter knows his stuff, and made sensible suggestions regarding the food and the choice of wine. It takes a while before the food arrives, but it is worth waiting for. The waiter... More

We spent a week in Funchal in March and I had spent a bit of time picking restaurants from Trip Advisor that we wanted to visit. Olives was on the road looking down on our hotel at the Lido so ideal for dinner. When we visited there were road works which took away from the look of the restaurant however... More

Lovely food, service very slow, which meant it was freshly cooked. Fresh sardines a delight. So if you are not in a rush, good place to eat.

Olives does not look up to much particularly with the roadworks in the street outside. However, the food is good and the manager is a very cheery host. The roadworks have impacted on the business and even lead to a suspension of lunchtime opening. We were there on a dark evening but understand that there is a nice view down... More

After trying several restaurants around the area we were thrilled to find this one. You DO have to look closely for it as you are not dragged in off the street like many others. The food is fabulous quality, beautifully presented and very reasonably priced. Although not a wine connoisseur myself the owners would be very happy to recommend. They... More

A few years ago I spent nearly a week trying to find Olives when it was situated in the town centre to no avail. My hotel and taxi drivers could not tell me how to find it and I wrote about that on tripadvisor. Having read that Olives had now moved to the Lido area I was determined to find... More

Sought this place out having seen good reviews and did need to look for it, especially with current road works making it's less than dramatic entrance even less conspicuous. However it proved well worth the effort and we decided to pay a second visit during our 2 week holiday on Madeira. The atmosphere and food is refined, well presented and... More

Food OK but staff seemed to spend all of their time cosying up to regulars (nearly all Brits). Meat better cooked than fish.
