With the Fort closed for refurbishment and do Sal now showing an improvement in wine & service on previous visits, this is now definitely the lead restaurant in central Funchal. Only one slightly misjudged dish (foie gras overpowered by bed of purée) compensated by an excellent mackerel dish and an amazing lobster pasta dish. Good wine match, although they still... More

The Armazem do Sol is an excelelnt restaurant in Funchal. I think it is just in the Old City, but no where is very far. There was a good menu choice on a fixed price with the staff seelcting a wine with your courses, alllowing you to sample a glass or two of different wine, instead of having to ordert... More

In the old town, with tables in a pleasant stone walled room, nicely spaced out, or outside if you prefer. The €39 deal is excellent and wine and water truly flow. Food is tasty and well presented. I had the classic scabbard with banana which was delicately seasoned after the scallops and a chocolate "volcano" for desert. There was during... More

Quite difficult to review this place. The cooking is skilled and delicious, the old warehouse an interesting old venue, the waiting staff willing and friendly, so why doesn't it quite work? Could be the abysmal lighting, cold and harsh, could be the rubbish acrylic modern art on sale on the walls, could be the poor hygiene in the male loo... More

The old salt works is a superb venue for a romantic meal for two. It has beautiful surroundings, subtle lighting, live music, comfortable outdoor seating where you can smoke, a truly delicious a la carte menu and excellent wines chosen by the waiters to suit your choice of food. At 39 euros the meal was very good value for money... More

We had a really lovely meal at this restaurant; the atmosphere, food and staff were all worthy of a 5 star rating. I would recommend this restaurant.

A wonderful atmosphere, not over formal and with excellent food and wine. The service is good with all of the staff showing a real willingness to make dining with them a special experience. Really good value for money.

From reading reviews and on first entering the place we thought this looked to be 'the business'. We had booked in advance, through our own 5 star hotel (who we found out when booking, also recommend this place to hotel guests). We were shown to our table....Good start. Thereafter everything was indifferent. Service was mediocre, food looked good but was... More

The food is good but the descriptions are not entirely accurate. For example squid ink added to the sashimi! Also beware that like so many restaurants in Portugal the smoking laws are liberally interpreted do you have an enclosed terrace that allows smoking and as it adjoins the main restaurant those tables nearest also benefit from passive smoking. Not great!

Spotted this place on Trip Advisor and in local guide book. Went for the Set Menu and it was just excellent and we could not fault it. Impeccable service, exceptional food and lovely gentle discreet musician. One of the very best restaurants that I have sampled worldwide and I have been around! And at 78 euros for two - that...
