Description: The Armazem do Sal Restaurant is located in an old building, which has a history that dates over two hundred Years. In its inception it served to store salt, then a commodity, for Madeira's population. This imposing structure made of basalt flagstones and massive wooden beams takes you to quite a distant past. The Armazem do Sal Restaurant offers a traditional menu with a modern twist, with a variety of items prepared by our young Chef Roberto Barros and his team. All of this is enjoyed with carefully selected wines, an exquisite service and live music daily for a memorable experience. We came to Madeira for a week and decided to make this restaurant the final night. We were so glad we did as it was superb! Easily the finest restaurant we had eaten in during the course of the week and we went to some crackers! The food, service and atmosphere were second to none and the cost was reasonable... More

One of my colleges visited this restaurant a week before I was due to fly out. She enthused greatly about it and went twice in one week so decided to go based upon her recommendation. My wife and I chose the three course option which came with different wines for each meal, expertly chosen to compliment your choice of dishes.... More

Maybe it was the cook's bad night or maybe our expectations were too high. Being one of Funchal's most expensive restaurants we expected top quality, but it was just so-so. The tuna of the tuna tataki was certainly not fresh and the peixe espada was OK but not as tasteful as other "low profile" restaurants. The dessert "vulcano de chocolate"... More

Not only the best meal we have had in Madeira, one of the best meals we have ever had. Whilst many restaurants are making good use of quality ingredients, this restaurant has a talented chef in the kitchen who can really cook. The bisque in my lobster ravioli was divine - beautiful depth of flavour. Extensive wine list with a... More

We visited the 'Salt Cellar' as it is known to the locals while on holiday. We have visited it every year for the past 4 years. The A La Carte menu is excellent especially if you like large prawns as a starter. The 39 Euro option on the menu is good value for money with plenty of wine to keep... More

Visited this restaurant after recommendations from friends, hotel and guide book, and was not disappointed. We didn't have a reservation but the waiter was able to find us a table, but we were lucky. Every table was filled soon after we arrived, so reserving is definitely recommended. They have a very good deal of three courses for €30 or €39... More

We found everything about the Armazem do Sal excellent except the menu choice. The service and ambiance were second to none and the value for money provided by the 39 Euro menu is very good. However, my wife and I found the menu a little exotic and had some difficulty choosing three courses we liked. This of course is a... More

Coming to Funchal each year we have discovered some good restaurants. However this one leaves the rest far behind. The chef produces food that would be fit to serve in the finest restaurants in London. Great taste sensations beautifully served dishes, and they know how to match appropriate wines with the selected courses. Interesting decor as well

Stumbled across this place during the day. Went back that evening, quite upmarket, glad I wore a shirt! Very good value meals, really good food and a fantastically relaxing atmosphere. Booking essential although we didn't the lovely young waitress managed to squeeze us in but it was packed. Highly recommended.

This restaurant and the staff are great, welcoming, a vibrant atmosphere. They really know how to cook fish, and make you feel looked after. One of the better restaurants in Funchal. The fresh fish of the day is a must.
