Traditional Portuguese food made with care

Restaurants in Portuguese Pousadas are usually fairly good, but this one exceeds expectations. And we get to visit the old kitchen of the palace, with a very large and beautiful chimney.

We had our wedding dinner here and it was excellent. The food quality, the taste, and the attentiveness of the staff was outstanding! We told the chef what kind of dishes we were looking for and he designed truly unique menu. The dessert was a buffet with many different kinds of portuguese delicacies. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone... More

The restaurant itself is in the original kitchen of the Palácio de Queluz, which makes you feel that you're in the 18th century. There was a lady playing harp during dinner, which made the atmosphere more romantic. The food was great, very tasty and the service was professional and friendly. Definitely worth the visit!

This restaurant in housed in the original kitchen at the Queluz Palace, with the original copper, chimneys, etc. It is an old-fashioned and elegant restaurant and rather pricey, but worth it for the experience. There were few other diners when we were there, The service was attentive, but they did bring us the wrong entrée which was quickly corrected. They... More

A Cozinha Velha, situated in the Palace of Queluz (former royal residence in Portugal and now a national monument), is a traditional and old restaurant which had struggled to live up to its name and fame, and has been trying to diversify its cuisine keeping the right balance between modernity and tradition. Apart from its regular menu, there are occasional... More

It's a pretty dining room and nice eating in the old palace but the food was just ok. This and the pousada have seen better days sadly.

It's a great atmosphere, as it's the old palace kitchen and on one evening a harpist was playing, but the food was a disappointment. Either too salty, or bland. The desserts are good, though.

We stayed four nights at the pousada and ate at the restaurant twice. The setting is atmospheric and well set out, making a feature of the massive original chimney. Service by the Maitre d' was excellent and he spoke excellent English. He also suggested a couple of places in Lisbon to buy Portuguese wines. Whilst there were very few people... More

Perhaps our expectations were too high but, based on positive guidebook reviews, we made a point of dining at the Cozinha Velha while in Queluz. The restaurant was quiet for a Friday evening and the pace and quality of the service seemed matched to that feeling. The two servers seemed stretched as the restaurant slowly filled with guests and the... More

I have dined here 5 times over the last 30 years & they always exceed my highest expectations. The cuisine is of the highest standards, wine is excelent and very reasonably priced but it is the personal service that sets it apart from everywhere else. We always spend a long morning exploring the palace and its grounds before a long... More
