Old Fashion Goodness

What a surprise to have such a restaurant amid the hustle/bustle of Lisbon. Located in downtown Lisbon, near Avenida da Liberdade, go back in time to an era when quiet, elegant dining mattered. Opening in 1936, former President Salazar lunched here daily. There are two dining rooms: the... read more

5 of us had a very good dinner at Gambrinus a few weeks ago. Unfortunately we got off to a bad start and considered leaving. The wine steward recovered, came back to the table and started over with good humor. The chairs were uncomfortable and folks out on the busy pedestrian streets seemed to be having more fun than we... I can't complain about the food or the service both were very good , but it is a formal dining setting and not what we would usually choose to frequent.

Lovely restaurant with a nice old ambiance, nice service, I went with the bartender's recommendation for the food and drink, the house white wine was good, and as a big fan of sea food I thought I can't go wrong with anything so I had the sea bass with tartar sauce, which was disappointing for the money that I knew... Coming in, we knew it was pricey. During a walking tour it was pointed out that it is one of the places to eat. It did help our hotel is a few steps away. The wait staff are all well-trained. But they serve with warmth and humor. Food was fantastic!

It is the real food theatre in the heart of Lissabon. From noisy and crowded street you get into another philosophy of cooking, serving and tasting. Fresh oysters with champaigne is a good starter for food show. I think no matter what you order- everything will be above average. At the end of meal try one of the oldest and... More

When in the center of Lisbon and getting tired of the buzz, heat and noise, take a break at the counter and enjoy one of their many home made snacks. I absolutely love the stylish but unpretentious service, their beef sandwiches but most of all the quiet efficiency! It is my favourite waste of time, independent of being an hour... More

This is an elegant place with wood paneled walls, a bar like in old times and waiters that know their profession. Good and reasonable wine list which changes pleasantly from all the tourist traps around on the same street. This is a place to celebrate life and food. Fish soup a bit on the tomato side but excellent Croquetas. The... More

Very high quality and priced restaurant. I think its more local than tourist. Outside whole bunch of restaurants and soliciting. The atmosphere was like all the restaurants that have class and they know it. The service is impeccable, the food was good, except for what my wife ordered which I had to eat Cod Fish, The steak cooked in mushroom... More

Unlike some middle aged guys who try to look trendy, Gambrinus is and old-fashioned, old styled restaurant that is just exactly what one could expect: a place to go for excellent food, impeccable service, and a definetely untrendy ambience. As a matter of fact, although a long-time Lisbon resident, I had never been to Gambrinus until today. What a pitty:... More
