This is the perfect place to while away an hour, drinking vinho verde after a tour of Castelo de Sao Jorge. It is a sun trap and ideal for resting and watching the world go by. The staff are friendly, the toilet is clean and the wine is reasonably priced. Well worth finding to give it a try

Although this small and simple restaurant is located next to the castle it seems to be popular with both tourists and locals. Although my wife speaks Portuguese, the host speaks perfect English and is able to explain the food, ingredients and wine in great detail. The menu is mainly fish with a few other options (chicken and pork I think).... More

Very good family run restaurant. Excellent food and presentation. Good variety, excellent wine selection and staff more than helpful with suggestions. All desserts made in house and so fresh and delicious! Chef came out and socialized with customers ensuring we were satisfied with everything.

Our visit was based on favourable reviews in TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed. The menu is limited as one would expect for a restaurant that seats 12 people!! The food and service were fabulous. Finding the restaurant was a challenge for the taxi driver and I am not sure I could have found my way home through the Alfama... More

A great little find. A small restaurant with just six tables for two. We managed to book the last available table that evening. The restaurant is run by a husband and wife team, she doing the cooking and him the front of house. We received a warm welcome and chose a table. Despite the size of the restaurant the menu... More

Found this place via the TA app - restaurants near me. This was a real winner in an area that is filled with tourist traps. Only 12 seats, so we had to wait. But the food was good; service was welcoming; price was excellent: 21.50 for a nice lunch for two. Only problem - and you have to take this... More

This restaurant is tucked away under the castle and has a unique atmosphere. Tiny, with only 12 places, you are bound to talk to your neighbours and discuss the excellent food. Especially delicious were the desserts, freshly made, seemingly straight from the oven: the night we were there they included a pear tart with red fruit glaze and apfelstrudel.

Very friendly bar and restaurant right by the castle, excellent stop for a drink, a rest or a bite to eat after the climb up the hill to Sao Jorge. We had an interesting discussion about the legal necessity in Portugal for establishments and services to have a complaints book, which even extends to the police! But it might be... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighborhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
