Good Portugiese Food

Nice traditional restaurant with cozy atmosphere. The grilled fish was very good. The owner was friendly and very routinated. Nice neighbourhood. We can definitely recommend the restaurant.

We tried one of their famous Cod mash dishes (there are allegedly 365 ways to cook Cod in Lisbon), and have to say it was one of the most unique flavors I have tasted. It came together great! The owners were very friendly despite my zero knowledge of Portuguese and prices were extremely reasonable. If you want local, high quality... More

Hidden, small place in Alfama. Door can be closed so you need to knock - it makes this place a bit mysterious. Restaurant is really quiet and calm - perfect for couples. And food - amazing! I can't say anything bad.

Small restaurant with a good vibe and, ofcourse, very good food. The restaurant is in an amazing neighbourhood with fado everywhere.

Four of us were wandering through the Alfama in the vicinity of lunchtime and spotted a sign that indicated a charcoal grill. We looked inside an attractive little blue and white restaurant and, although it was nearly empty, decided to give it a try. Good choice! We wanted seafood and ordered grilled sardines, prawns and cod baked with mayonnaise. Plus... More

Saw this restaurant as we walked past during the day. It looked nice so we decided to go back in the evening to eat. We didn't make a reservation. When we returned the door was shut! But looking in I could see diners so I knocked on the door and the owner let us in! It wasn't full but there... More

We tried to eat here tonight. Turned up at 7:30 to be told to come back at 8. We asked twice to make a reservation but were told "no need". When we came back at 8 there were people inside eating but the door was closed and locked. Having read the previous reviews we rang the bell. The owner came... More

During our weekend jn lisbon we were adviced to eat here. It was a bit difficult to find since the door was closed but a little note told us to ring the bell. Then we saw the nice owner, few tables and great atmosphere and were positively surprised! Really authentic and good food, very reasonable prices. 1/2 liter red wine... More

We were wandering aimlessly around and came across this place. We got a cod potato pie of some sort and it was very nice. Reasonably priced as well. Not the busiest (having to ring a doorbell to get in probably doesn't help) but nice once you're in.

After some wandering around in the Alfama (during which you can so easily get turned around), we came across Malmequer Bemmequer. I recalled it being a place to go to, so we decided to stop in for a little “snack”. We ended just getting the grilled shrimp, and they were SO good (though slightly pricey). Even if that’s all you... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighborhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
