Atmospheric and Great Food

We had dinner after the Menen Gate ceremony. The decor is atmospheric and being family run you are made to feel very comfortable. The food was hearty on a coolish evening and just what was needed.Excellent quality and a fey minutes from the centre

This restaurant was recommended by locals. They serve good homey food (rabbit with beer and raisins, ham with mustard sauce, beef stew...) in a quite dark but very typical old-fashioned Flemish interior (dark woods, small statues to decorate). If I look at the pictures other reviewers have posted, I think they rarely change the menu. That's fine as the dishes... More

This is a small restaurant in the heart of Ypres serving local food. Portions are large and filling so don't have much for lunch. We had a chicken dish and a ham joint - both slow cooked and delicious.

If you're planning a weekend break in Ypres, then I would recommend a Friday or Saturday night at De Ruyffelaer. Family run delivering fresh, beautifully cooked and delicious food. I selected the set menu of the day and could not fault. This is a small friendly restaurant that needs booking in advance. You won't be disappointed.

Another recommendation by the owner of Mimi's (see separate review). He managed to book us in and even walked us to the door. Food superb - we had three courses and each was faultless. Oud yper beer a fine accompaniment. We're going back tomorrow night.

Booked in advance by email, just as well as it was very busy. It is a great place to eat, the owners are wonderful; attentive without being " in your face ". The service is amazing, they give you plenty of time to enjoy your aperitif and choose your food. The food is wonderful, rustic and refined. You come out... More

What a wonderful find the De Ruyffelaer is. I booked a couple of weeks in advance by email, as I'd heard that this restaurant gets very busy- I'm so glad I did. From the moment we arrived we were greeted warmly, the decor was beautifully traditional, the meal was wonderful Flemish food with lots of flavour, great house wines to... More

The restaurant is about a five minute walk away from the Grote Market and therefore has fewer tourists. It seems that most local hotels will recommend this as the place to eat in Ypres and it was noticeable that there were many local customers. Booking is strongly advised, we noted many people being turned away at 8 o'clock on a... More

Good for locals, good for tourists. Only one dish for a vegetarian, but.. A very good one! And if you go, you should ask if you can get a little 'stoemp'.. They got a recipe from heaven!
