Description: Restaurant Basaal has been based at Dunne Bierkade, one of the most...
Restaurant Basaal has been based at Dunne Bierkade, one of the most beautiful canals in the centre of The Hague since 2001. Chef Bas Oonk has led the way for years with his culinary style on Avenue Culinaire, a range of restaurants and cafes on Dunne Bierkade, each with their own unique and international style. Cosy restaurant and terrace Basaal serves dishes from the European kitchen in a warm, contemporary and intimate atmosphere. The restaurant consists of the adjoined parterres of two small town houses. In the summertime you can enjoy dining on the spacious terrace with view on the charming Dunne Bierkade. Kitchen Over the past few years, Bas Oonk's kitchen has evolved into a contemporary, basic style using regional products. For several years, Restaurant Basaal has been a member of Euro Toques, a collaborative that focuses on the use of natural, and preferably regional and seasonal produce. In 2015, the Michelin guide awarded the efforts and consistent quality of Basaal with a BiB Gourmand. 'Bib' is short for Bibendum, the Michelin man, that awards a mark of distinction to eating establishments that offer an excellent meal for under 37 euros.

great food, briljant staff

Great, original menu without any fusion fuss. Just well prepared authentic dishes, accompanied by very nice wine. Steak tartare is a classic there. Staff caters to individual needs. You feel well taken care off. I love the fact that it is located at one of prettiest canals in The Hague.

I do not think that I will come back - it should be all as recommendation or lack of it (whatever you prefer first). The restaurant is located nearly out of the city centre, but still not so far away, so you can enjoy your walk (unless it is raining 50/50 chance). The interior of the restaurant is cosy, and... Nice service-translated the Dutch menu to us and explained the dishes well. Good food-daily menu, using only what's fresh/in season. Will go back!

The menu is changing daily, so you never know 100% what the choice of the day is. The friendly staff will explain the specials of the day at the table, which makes it even harder to make a choice. Everything sounds amazing! We took a 6-course chefs menu (why choose one thing if you can taste all?) and we were... More

Now this was a real big surprise in my own town! If you wish a lovely evening complemented by beautiful creative dishes that taste awesome, you can go here. If you are in a rush, skip this place cause for this beauty you need to take your time to sip some wine and have your food prepared with love. And... More

Had dinner here with a friend last Saturday evening. Very warm and welcoming service in a trendy but warm interior. Good, fresh and well prepared food in great combinations. Service was never rushed although is was quite busy. We had the 3-courses surprise menu which was great. You can tell them what you don't like and what you are in... More

A local restaurant with high standards and exciting food. All that means that the service is warm and personal, with the chef often passing through the dining room and the other staff keen to help. We had a tremendous meal of local and very seasonal ingredients, sensitively and skillfully dealt with. Good wine recommendations were part of the performance.

Although we had booked and printed the confirmation, they were surprised to see us - but never have we then had "we are thrilled you are here, come and have a nice evening" which we did. The kitchen is small, and ambitious. The setting is simple but pleasant. The menu was translated dish by dish by the co-owner, the chef's... More

Very lovely and inviting. Menu wasn’t in English but everyone (including the chef?!) was ready to translate. Great service, interesting and tasty food and the staff was ready to offer suggestions. Don’t miss this little gem along the canal. Cod = $22.00, lamb =$25.00

I'd love to give this place a much better score as the food was generally very good and the service was impeccable. The main issue here is timing- it's terrible. I enjoy relaxed dining but waiting over an hour for the first course of 5 is too long. We then had a further wait of 40 minutes for our main... More
