Good food in a quirky atmosphere

It is now over a month since we visited this friendly restaurant. The atmosphere is fun, but unpretentious, and as the name suggests has an air of irreverence or defiance; typical Dutch! Theatre apart, this is a most enjoyable dining experience. The food is the main thing and it was good. The... read more

In our little city, at the intersection of the Keizerstraat and the idyllic Rapenburg you can find Artikel 461 Verboden Toegang. The restaurant has been well furnished, with ample space around the tables so it doesnt feel busy even if it's booked to the max. We had our aniversary diner here. Starter was very good, enjoyed the carpaccio. I had... More

This is a restaurant in Leiden that is well worth the visit : buzzing atmosphere, overseen by the husband and wife owner, outstanding cuisine at very reasonable prices. Dutch cuisine, meat well-sourced, perfectly cooked to order, good fish and vegetarian choices, excellent wine list, personally sourced by the owners. Overall, the ambience created is perfect : a mixed clientele of... More

We got taken here by some friends who live near the town. What a great town it is with loads of history. Food was lovely , atmosphere was good. Service was OK but nothing special but was good for here. Would love to go back to the town and this reasturant.

Nice atmosphere and good food. Service was okay and gets a bit slow when they were busy. The theme of the restaurant is fun and different. Location is nice in the old part of town. overall good expereince.

We have just had a wonderful christmas day dinner in this quirky, interesting restaurant. The signs on all the walls make for interesting reading and the atmosphere that evening was great. What a difference to back home, where you are sometimes rushed through your meal. Here we were treated to wonderful, friendly service and allowed to savour each delicious course.... More

Great atmosphere, great food, not-so-great service, in short. I really appreciate the tongue-in-cheek atmosphere. Signs everywhere, from various countries, and the dishes on the menu all had 'forbidden' names. I suppose being able to speak Dutch helps with that. The food was good. The dessert was delish, apparently their Creme brûlée is a must-try. (It was good!) Service was sub-standard... More

Verboden toegang translates roughly as no admittance. The walls are adorned with these signs from railways around the world, the food is equally good, the service was attentive and very helpful, the food is well presented, but not over the top like some places. A good all rounder and well worth booking a table for lunch or evening.

The food is very nice if you want a nice/fancy fish or meat meal but the strong point of this restaurant is it's decoration The wall are totally filled with signs from all around the world (the name of the restaurant btw) That doesn't make the food taste better than another restaurant but it changes from traditional white wall of... This place uses all kinds of signs to decorate their restaurant, and incorporates them in the names on the menu as well. Great atmosphere and good food! Worth a visit!
