Our first rijstaffel, as demanded by our well-travelled friends

When I posted that we were in Amsterdam on FB, everyone said we had to have a rijstaffel while we were there. Our Dutch friend chose this restaurant (in a very old building) near hotel and we found it is one of the top rated in the city. The food was excellent and the service even better! I'll... read more

Having read Rick Steves' Amsterdam guide, we had to take his advise and try the rijstaffel at Sama Sebo. The presentation and flavor palate were not disappointing. There was a lot of food for two people, but having skipped one meal and walked several miles, we were able to finish most of it. The staff was friendly and helpful. I... More

This restaurant is very informal and easy. Make sure you order the rijstaffal and not a la carte. That is the only reason to eat here. It is a lot to eat but a lot of fun and all very tasty. Tip: do not bother to get anything extra because you get a lot and everything in the rijstaffal tastes... More

We had canadian family visiting. They asked for real dutch food so we brought them at Sama Sebo. It was delicious. We cant think of a dutch kitchen without Indonesian food. Thanks.

We were invited to this local Indonesian favourite (over fifty years old) by our friends from Amsterdam. We were not disappointed, as the food was excellent and so was the service. There were so many dishes to choose from the four of us had trouble finishing them! I strongly recommend booking a table as it is so popular. We are... More

I think this place is living on past glories. Food was okay, waiters were keen to push the set menu - this was the only thing with an English translation. Food came way too fast - within 5 minutes and we were out after 40! There are better Indonesian restaurants in Amstardam.

This restaurant is located in the museum district. It serves Indonesian food exclusively. This one is a local favorite and as such is reasonable and not fancy. All tables had been reserved when we arrived, but we got the only table in the bar (which is quite small). Many different people served us. We had the "rice table". This is... More

Very busy restaurant, so had to wait for awhile for a table, most people had the set menu with lots of small dishes, it seemed to be a lot of food for two, so asked if we could have a smaller version, which was fine with the staff - the food came out very promptly all piled on one plate... More

After a day a the museums we stopped for a late lunch at Sama Sebo and were not disappointed. We had never eaten this kind of food before but we like Indian and Thai and enjoyed the comments from Rick Steves that this was one of his favorite restaurants in Amsterdam. The only choice you have to make is rice... More

Lunch with family, ordered a la carte, 8 dishes, gado2, sambal tempe, sate kambing , udang buncis etc. Great taste, and service is exellent. This restaurant will survive even in Jakarta.

Staying in Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)

Neighborhood Profile
Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.
