Beautiful room, good food.

It's worth stopping by the Café Americain just to see the décor. Really beautiful. But then sit down and enjoy a meal! We ate there very late one night, having just arrived. There weren't a lot of wait staff on duty, and the kitchen was closing, but we got our order in. The main course came out... read more

Stayed at the hotel joined to the restaurant. The hotel was really good but this restaurant let's it down. On entering were greeted by a waitress who waved and said sit anywhere. Then we were left. We waited and waited and after trying to get the waiting staff attention for some considerable time we eventually got menus and ordered drinks.... More

Near the Leidseplein the Cafe Americain is a wonderfully restored cafe in the Hotel American. Comfortable and inviting the large windows which line the cafe are great for whiling away the day. There is a nice terrace outside by the fountain if the weather is good. The art deco decor has been painstakingly maintained. Food is quite good, but it's... More

I made a reservation on-line and somehow my booking for afternoon tea went astray. The kitchen normally need advance warning for high tea but the chef very kindly agreed to accommodate us. We were told we might have to wait for an hour but after an afternoon in the Stedelijk museum that was fine! We were served a glass of... More

What a lovely find - step in to the gorgeous interior and into a world of elegance. A reading corner with cushions, and tables to share drinks and meals with friends. Or stay outside by the fountain in the al fresco area and watch the passing parade of people. Order a high tea, or coffee, or drinks, or plan a... More

The food was incredible but the service was disappointing. We had to ask 3 times for water and then were charged €5 for it... We'd almost finished our meals when we finally got water, there were plenty of waiters on and this simple request needn't be neglected. A very average dining experience. Food was excellent though.

We had very pleasant breakfast at the cafe. The view at the cold streets outside was lovely. The breakfast was more than ok.

The dining room is gorgeous! Worth a stop by. After taking in the dining room, we headed over to the bar for a drink. Wait staff was friendly and the people watching was great.

You certainly can't eat the scenery, but this lovely time warp sets a mood of elegance and nostalgia. My fears of a large hotel dining hall banquet mediocrity were fully met with their breakfast buffet. Most items are left on the steam table too long. Rubbery scrambled eggs and often under cooked bacon would be unacceptable in an Army mess... More

Reserved table for 7 pm - We were left waiting for more than 30 min in the entrance. Asking for a place where we could have a drink, we were finally offers a drink in the bar - still waiting for our table. The food was ok - but not more than ok. Never again
