Nice, clean restaurant, service a bit slow.

We ate outside by the fountain and everything was perfect. A nice environment. I did have to ask the waiter to bring our wine, as the guys beer had been delivered, but the wine never came (20 min wait-excessive) The waiter was nice, but it was not busy, so don't know why the service was slow.

For almost hundred years the cafe for artists like Harry Mulisch and Hella Haasse. Famous German writers like Klaus Mann, Erika Mann, Ödon von Horvath frequented this café before World War II.

The Café Americain is an elegant place in which to have a drink before dinner in Amsterdam - ice cold rosé wine and honeyed nuts in an Art Deco bar. High ceilings, stained glass, comfortable armchairs, newspapers....bliss!

My Hotel's restaurant has an excellent buffet breakfast. It has a reading room section with many magazines and papers. It has a bar, and adequate staff. The ambiance of the 100 year hotel is seen in the windows, ceilings and architecture.

I stayed here and had dinner at the restaurant every evening. The food was great ( I had a salad every evening and they were lovely - not too much oil except for what you put on it yourself), the view lovely and the service nice and unobtrusive. Reasonably priced too.

If you don't feel like walking over to the myriads of cafes and restaurants across the square, this café is adequate for a small, unassuming meal. Sitting outside on the terrace, watching the water fountain was relaxing.

Stayed at the hotel joined to the restaurant. The hotel was really good but this restaurant let's it down. On entering were greeted by a waitress who waved and said sit anywhere. Then we were left. We waited and waited and after trying to get the waiting staff attention for some considerable time we eventually got menus and ordered drinks.... More

Near the Leidseplein the Cafe Americain is a wonderfully restored cafe in the Hotel American. Comfortable and inviting the large windows which line the cafe are great for whiling away the day. There is a nice terrace outside by the fountain if the weather is good. The art deco decor has been painstakingly maintained. Food is quite good, but it's... More

I made a reservation on-line and somehow my booking for afternoon tea went astray. The kitchen normally need advance warning for high tea but the chef very kindly agreed to accommodate us. We were told we might have to wait for an hour but after an afternoon in the Stedelijk museum that was fine! We were served a glass of... More
