Good concept, great service

Van Vlaanderen had a Michelin * for a while, but they were not very pleased with it, as it limited their creativity. So when they lost it, they were not unhappy. Van Vlaanderen had a Michelin * for a while, but they were not very pleased with it, as it limited their creativity. So when they lost it, they were not unhappy. Booked a Friday night table for two and we weren't disappointed. It was a straightforward tram ride from Centraal station (16 or 24) to Weteringcircuitnand then a short walk. We went for the 5 course Chef's menu, but not with the matched wines preferring to select a bottle from the good selection on the wine list. The food was beautifully... More

My wife and I were regular visitors to Van Vlaanderen under the previous owners and considered it to be our favourite restaurant. This was our first visit since the change of ownership and we visited with a degree of trepidation as we were concerned that things might not be as good. We shouldn't have been concerned. The restaurant has the... More

This restaurant, located near the city centre, is one of my favourites in Amsterdam. It offers all the ingredients I expect to find in a good restaurant: - a warm, tasteful interior - the tables are set wide apart, guaranteeing the privacy of your conversation - no music - pleasant, attentive, but informal service - the food is of excellent... We were brought to Van Vlaanderen by close friends who eat here regularly as this is their favourite restaurant in Amsterdam - we were, nor surprisingly, made very welcome by the management and very friendly and efficient staff. It's a cosy unprepossessing place on two levels, very accessible with a tram stop outside. I struggled to find the Tripadvisor entry,... More

We were there on Jan 2 for an IENS dinner special. It was the game week special. It was a 4 course meal. The staff were wonderful . My partner only speaks English and while the waitress explained the meal she immediately switched to English which saved me the translating job. We had a partridge appetizer. I had never eaten... Started promisingly . We had the tasting menu, lovely table, lovely waitress. First two courses arrived promptly, really good food. But the place was seriously packed, and nothing else came for an hour. And when it did it was a little dull. Desserts uninspiring. And by then we were grumpy anyway. Shame. I'd not go back.

A good few years ago, working in Amsterdam we ended up at this restaurant. I thought it was the best meal I'd ever had. As the wife and I had a trip to Amsterdam with my wife was a great excuse to see if my memory was playing tricks on me. I'm glad to say that all is well with... More

I thought I had seen the end of 'Nouvelle cuisine' (the art of serving less and charging more) in France so was surprised to find that art revived in Holland of all places - the Dutch are very 'Ja' or 'Nee' and are not frivolous or pretentious especially when it comes to food - their best cuisine is basic and... I was not sure what to expect when it came to the food in Amsterdam but I was delighted to discover Van Vlaanderen. Had the tasting menu with wine accompaniments and honestly, still dream about that meal. Many courses but the portions were well controlled so that by the end of the meal I was sated but not stuffed. Great... More
