Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter. Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere. Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

Great food!!

Out of the 4 nights that we stayed there, we went to Van Kerwijk's for 3 of those nights for a meal. The place is small so go a little bit earlier in order to get a table; around 6.30 - 6.45 pm. The food is really, really good and everything is homemade, fresh to order. The steak with the... read more

A very nice restaurant where most of the guests are locals despite the location close to the touristic areas of Amsterdam (~200m from Dam Square). Excellent food and service for a very decent price.

It was a great dinner , very special Dutch food, loved it! Don't miss on the meat with strawberry jam and cheese! There's no booking but it's worth the wait. Located bang in the center.

What an excellent find. The fish was mouse was unexplainably good, a really pleasant experience with excellent service, great food and worth every cent. Very reasonable prices and amde all the better by the great ambience and the staff. As well as the fish the meatloaf was outstanding. Would highly recommend you will not be disappointed.

We chose this cozy little place based on other trip-advisor reviews, thank you. It was well worth finding. Very good service from start to finish. The menu is explained by the staff at your table as it changes often. The food was very tasty, especially the chicken in coconut milk. We would also recommend this to anyone travelling in Amsterdam.

My good friend suggested the we check out Van Kerkwijk and we mad a point of having supper there tonight. First off thank you to Andrea for the recommendation. The Van Kerkwijk was very close to our hotel and as it was raining on our first evening we decided it would be the driest option! We were so glad we went, the food is delicious and we ended up going another 2 times it was so good. We really enjoyed the whole experience, nice and relaxed. The staff were all... More

This restaurant was recommended and it didn't fail to impress. There was a 30min wait, you could wait inside or outside and have a drink. There is no written menu, but the descriptions are very clear. The starters are substantial and the mains come with salad and fries. The sweets are made by the mother, and worth trying, the cheesecake... More

Had dinner here whilst visiting Amsterdam. One of the best places I have ever came across in the city. Had to wait for a table because it was busy. We were happy waiting at the bar with a beer. All the food was cooked perfectly and service very efficient. Will defiantly return during future trips to Amsterdam.

A cozy restaurant in the middle of Amsterdam, close to Dam square. We had lunch, and it was big lunch, with great taste. You don't get a menu, but it is written on the wall and told by the lady.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighborhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
