Back again after 42 yrs.!

Went back after many years but this time with a family gathering. Unique environment with equally unique food from the Dutch West Indies. I had forgotten that much too much food is ordered on the Rijstaffel menu but most enjoyable. Wasn't nearly as spicy as I was prepared for but I think they... read more

We were happy to get a reservation at this well-regarded and always full Indonesian restaurant, but the enormous rijsttafel we ordered (Rijsttafel Istemewa) was a disappointment, especially when compared to a extraordinary rijsttafel we had in another restaurant the previous week. The flavors, ingredients, and textures were repetitive; nothing was a wow. Although the 18+ courses were supposedly divided into... More

I had dinner at Tempo Doeloe while visiting Amsterdam. I asked my hotel for a recommendation of where I could eat good Indonesian food, and they booked the table for me. What impressed me the most about my meal was that I was eating alone (I was travelling alone), which can be uncomfortable in nicer restaurants, but the restaurant made... More

We just arrived on probably the busiest weekend of the year, with no reservation. We were told there would be a little wait, so we had to sit at their bar and drink beer!! (Such a shame!!) they gave us a little snack, which just whet our appetites! Then came the rijstaffel. Sooooooo delicious. What a beautiful meal, produced from... More

The food is to die for, the selection, the rice taafel, the service, the fresh lobster, the service and the spirit of the place takes me back to the days when everything just seemed perfect, when everything seemed to mesh right. This place to me reminds me of so many things, my first proper wine tasting, romantic nights out, family... More

We had arrived here by chance, looking through the window the restaurant looked very busy. We asked the waitress if they had a table for 2 and was told one would be available in 10 minutes. We were whisked to the bar and had drinks within in minutes of arrival. We were seated quickly and the waitress help us through... More

What an amazing Risjtaffel dinner! This restaurant offers traditional Indonesian "rice table," where we were served about 22 small dishes, ranging from mild to spicy and also ranging in texture and taste. They were very accommodating when we told them we did not want anything super spicy. Can't wait to go back!

Great cooking and fantastic flavours. Don't be put off by the labelling. Spicey IS manageable! Book before you go. It's always busy. Taste the food and you will know why!

We had the Indonesian rice table. It was very interesting. Most dishes were good, but a few were not. We liked the way the dishes got increasingly hotter. This was great fun, as we barely made it through. Service was freindly and accommodating. Spent over 100 euros for 2 people for dinner.

Enjoyed our dinner here but as this was my second Indonesian dinner cannot tell you whether it was good or bad, only that we enjoyed it. Small is place(15 tables) but PACKED with mostly Dutch speakers many who knew the staff so must be popular with the locals. Place is no frills. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Can't... More
