Great place to try Indonesian food!

I was told by a friend that I must try Indonesian food and have a rice table when in Amsterdam. After hearing about Tempo Doeloe, I decided to try it when there visiting with my daughter. I emailed to get reservations and was told they only had a table across from the bar and would that be okay.It... read more

We were greeted by a sour-faced waitress which kept us locked outside until she verified our reservation. We were then led to a tiny tight-fitting table, and made to wait half an hour until they took our order of a rijstafel. We were served a lot of tiny pots of different dishes. The total was a meager offering. The dishes... More

BEST Indonesian place in town (and arguably the Netherlands). Walk in ahead of time to reserve a table, especially with larger parties. Service is no nonsense and friendly in a busy place. Food is fantastic. Hot pepper lovers should try the tasting menu! Five dishes ranging from mild to hot, in that order. The last dish left me crying- literally.... More

We were looking forward to trying the Rijstaffel here, as it was recommended by our host and seemed highly awarded. Our meal was OK, but not great. 1/3rd of the dishes were what I would call - 'palate cleansers,' mainly cabbage. We asked for the food spicy, and only the last dish was truly spicy, but that was not a... More

This was our first Rijstaffel. Although I've grown up on spicy foods, this was a whole new level. The restaurant is fairly small, so reservations are definitely necessary on weekends. The meal is elaborate with many courses, each subsequently spicier. Be warned though...do not go in the reverse order than recommended or your taste buds will be fried and you... More

The best rijstaffel in Amsterdam. Well worth the price! about 25 different very tasty dishes from mild to EXTREAMLY hot. Good service. Very small place so be sure to reserve a table in advance. Rijstaffel for 7 plus couple bottles wine around 45€ pp

Great food; they took care of me like an old friend, offered and delivered an excellent meal, provided good information. As a Mexican I know how differently spicy things can get and was totally pleased with the food, ambience and treatment by staff.

Having lived in Asia, we're used to hot food so when the waiter suggested we chose middle-spice level, we were tempted to ignore the advice. Luckily, we went along with it and ended up with some perfectly spiced dishes. This isn't your standard 'rijstafel' offering - more authentic Indonesian with lots of Sambal etc. Well worth a visit.

The restaurant was recommended for its rijsttafel and it was ok, but not more. We expected more and there was a lot of cabbage in each of the dishes which all tasted similar. The staff is not overwhelmingly friendly. However, the restaurant was full during dinner, so a reservation seems to be a must.
