Pasta e Basta restaurant nearly opposite the Rijksmuseum has a name that simply doesn’t do it justice. It means ‘pasta full stop’ but really should trumpet the singing accomplishments and mad party atmosphere that the waiters and waitresses deliver. The dining room is splendid, with scarlet-covered chairs, flouncy wall sconces, dramatic drapes and fine art, while the bar area is more modern but just as operatic. The wait staff really truly can sing, everything from Billy Joel to grand opera, and they get the joint jumping. The long tables attract hens and big groups and the small cosy niches and bar are right for more intimate numbers, and it is just one fantastic evening. The menu is Italian, incorporating excellently-sourced meat, fish and veg. Anti pasti are served buffet-style from a chilled grand piano. Main courses always include eight pasta dishes like spaghetti with squid ragout, lasagne bolognaise with tapenade and sage, and penne with radicchio and goats cheese. International wine list matches the international musical programme. Groups are so welcome, and the entire venue seats 110.

A great idea but ..

A great idea and lovely food . However we were kept waiting by the entrance for a while before any one came to greet us which was disappointing especially as I was required to call to confirm my booking earlier in the day. Preset menu with many options to eat. Musical melody by the service staff made for a magical dinning experience. Recommend while in Amsterdam 4 out of 5 stars

This is a lovely unexpected find that we made in March 2014. (Trip Advisor won't let me add the correct date of my visit). Service was excellent and all serving staff are great singers. If you love pasta and music, you will love this place. Booking recommended. We will definitely return when in the Dam next. Probably more for couples... More

Went to the restaurant with friends. The food is totally flavorless. Way too expensive for low quality food. We expected more of a show from the staff, it turned out that they sing one song at the time. A small plus for ok service and they are good singers.

Do book early to ensure a table. The waiters, waitresses and manageress are all super singers and do a great job at the tables. No....it is not opera....it is a mix of styles...every 10 minutes. The food is ok and designed to share. Have a great evening and enjoy.

Went with some co-workers on a one-day stay in Amsterdam. Simple italian food (the pastas especially was good - meatballs, ravioli and shrimpf pastas) mixed with singing (opera and more traditional music). A bit slow service but they only had one "sitting" per evening so dont rush or select the restaurant if you are in a hurry. They did only... More

This is an absolute gem of a restaurant which I found by mistake walking round the canals trying to get back to my hotel . My wife and myself were looking for somewhere to eat on the Sunday night before returning home the next day after a weekend away, and there are a lot of small cafe type bars around.... More

I have been enjoying this restaurant for years, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and great food with friends and clients. This is a lovely restaurant that offers a simple formula: a buffet of chilled starters, Italian themed main courses of pasta and/or seafood, a selection of desserts and staff singing songs. I normally hate this kind of thing and cringe, but... More
