Rice Table - A Must-Do Amsterdam Experience

On a recent visit to Amsterdam we tried rijsttafel, rice table, an Indonesian treat that is a specialty of Amsterdam. It is a bit like tapas, but in this case it is a series of small plates that surround a central plate of rice. We ate at Kantjil & de Tijger, a busy, relatively inexpensive... read more

Most of the food is good, for European standard, growing up in Malaysia, I love Asian cuisine and Indonesian cuisine is one of my top favorites. their dishes are somewhat altered to adapt to European taste buds. The restaurant was full and when we left, there were people queueing waiting to be seated. We got the Rijsttafelsmatjan menu for EUR... More

They have group seating outside where two couples can sit at one table with space in between them. The neighborhood is full of restaurants and staff is nice. One of very few places you could get free tap water! Food was average although we had heard a lot about their food. We had spicy fried rice that came with three... More

Great place to try Indonesian rice table. We were two couples who shared multiple dishes, all very delicious. In a great location near the Singel Canal and Spui tram stop.

I'm surprised to see the negative reviews on this spot. It was a few doors down from our apartment (off spuistraat) but I would have walked across town for it. We found it on yelp but also had our tour guide recommend it. We did not make reservations but we were late night. Earlier in the evening, reservations were required.... More

I wish that I had gone to Tripadvisor instead of Yelp! Whoever thinks this is the second best Indonesian restaurant in Amsterdam has all their taste in their mouth! One of the reviewers here said the food didn't seem fresh. DITTO! One said it seemed more like a cheap steam table. Exactly! Way overheated yellow rice. Tough stringy satays, room... More

Four of us guys at the end of a great sailing holiday had just one night in Amsterdam and we asked at the Tourist Office for a recommendation of a good Indonesian restaurant - Indonesia being Dutch until 1945. They came up trumps! It was a warm Saturday evening, on the charming Spuistraat and the place was buzzing. We turned... More

After being seated we looked at the menus and were unsure what to have. The couple next to us recommended the Nasi Goreng Rames (there's looked delicious) so we went for it. We also ordered the sharing starter. The food was delicious! Each mouthful left me wanting more. The portions here are on the large side (go hungry). The staff... More

The lunch menu is quite scarce, especially if you are a vegetarian or even fish eater. The dishes were average and didn't leave any impression. The peanut sauce even looked a little bit discouraging. Maybe the dinner menu is better...

A nice restaurant in a busy part of town. We had a full rijsttafel dinner for the experience of it. Service was good but the meal was let down on two points: there wasn't really enough room on the table for all the dishes, and there was no provision to keep the warm food warm, so by the time we... Neighborhood Profile
Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
